I am a torrent newbie myself and have started off with Azureus. Its been smooth so far. It even has different skill levels that you can set it on depending on your level of expertise with torrents and P2P sharing.

If you are using Windows XP, the firewall is enabled by default. You can disable it through the Network Settings in the Control Panel. If that doesn't work you may need to open a port in your router, which is (I believe) specified on the BitTorrent website somewhere (http://www.bittorrent.com/ ) (sorry I can't access that site while I'm at work)...good luck!!

drop whatever torrent program you are using and get bitlord.

Much better.
