Some kids use lipstick. Some kids get orange mohawks. Some kids go goth. In the mid-teens, lots of kids try weird & different stuff as they seek their own identities.
Is this something to be worried about? No, not really. The phase will pass soon enough... after all, you don't see many 30-yr-olds with punk hairdos, do you?
What really matters is whether your son is a good person. If he's nice to other people and takes responsibility for himself, then he'll turn out just fine, no matter how strange he makes his appearance at this age.
You want him to stop using lipstick? Don't prohibit him from using it - you can't make the prohibition stick (and if you can, there will be side effects). I would recommend some combination of "you are free to choose your own appearance", "I love you no matter what you look like", and "I'm disappointed that you choose to look like that".

Hi,
If you really want to "rid" him of his habit, you will first need to understand why he likes lipstick so much. It could be that your son is experimenting, in which case you could talk to him about the phase. Another possibility is that he could be gay, and this is one manifestation of that alternative sexuality. In either case, scolding/threatening will not work. Whatever the root cause, it will be worth having a straightforward, but sympathetic, discussion with him. In either case, 14 is a difficult age for any child, and your son might just be looking for a way to get your attention.
Finally, whatever the root cause, please don't be angry with him. Showing your displeasure will only force him to internalise his urges, and lead to other complications later on in life.

That is a great question...my guess is it is a phase- curiosity...I am NOT a psychiatrist but if you make this a big deal, it will become one. If you go against him, it could be trouble. Instead, why not try love? Once, when I was a kid I wanted to drink for fun. My mom looked at me and without judgement said...hmmm, OK, well just do me one favor...if you really want to drink lets drink together so I know you are OK. I thought about it and said...actually it isn't that important and that was that...maybe play around- show support but at the same time, let him see how silly he is really being...it's probably just a phase. Take away it's power...don't freak out- it could be worse.

From your other questions I see that lipstick is quite the issue in your house. Your son is picking up on your husband's penchant for the stuff. His behavior is echoing what he hears his father say.
That said, this is causing problems. Seek out someone professional who can counsel you. YOU. Leave them out of it for now. Ideally, eventually you can get to the root of the problem with your husband. Once he gains some control over his demand for this behavior, your son will follow-through also.

You can't get rid of his habit, and it's not worth making a big deal out of. If he's walking around with a bright red mouth in public and it's just an appearance issue you're concerned with, try steering him toward chapstick or clear lip gloss. He probably actually isn't gay. Most boys who like to play around with makeup are straight and just want to experiment. Love your son for who he is and he'll end up a better person for it.

DEAR LISA ..YOUR SONS LIKING TO LIPSTICK IS DUE TO YOUR OWN SITTING IN FRONT OF DRESSING TABLES FOR LONG HOURS WHEN HE WAS 3 OR 4 YEARS.. OR MAY BE SOMEBODY ELSE IN THE FAMILY WHOM HE WATCHED DOING MAKEUP EVERY NOW AND THEN...DON'T WORRY HE IS QUITE BIG AND WILL SOON QUIT HIS HABIT..JUST WAIT WHEN HIS SCHOOL FRIENDS START ASKING HIM QUESTIONS..HE WILL NATURALLY QUIT THE HABIT JUST AS NATURALLY HE PICKED IT UP...

Get the kid some chap stick and he can apply it all day long! Or he's just doing it to get attention from you...and it's working! Godloveya!

Why get rid of it? He likes wearing it and it isn't harmful to him. Believe me, there are worse things he could be wanting to do than wear makeup.

Tell him he needs to stop watching any television show that glorifies homsexuality. It's bad enough that gays have conquered the air waves without them propogating to impressionable youth that being gay is the only way you're going to be accepted in society.

Don't try to change him. Just let him express his own identity. The more you try to change him, the more he'll do things against your wishes. Accept him as he is.
