Allot of people start smoking at a young age, and this is mostly due to being pressured or bullied into it. Some people think its cool for some strange reason. Years ago it was never a big issue like it is now.

When I was drinking I tried cigarettes for the first time just to have experienced it. I had a lot of friends that smoked, so it was always around and I smoked a few more times when I was drinking, thinking it wouldn't affect me when I was sober. Then I finally tried smoking sober and it was much different, I could feel the effects much stronger. Then my boyfriend went to Europe for a month and it was so hard on me that I ended up picking up the habit.
The problem is that once you've tried cigarettes they are very psychologically addictive. It becomes habit to smoke one while driving, after a meal, etc because they are relaxing and make you feel good (for a short period of time). Every smoke knows the health effects of smoking cigarettes and most of the ones i know are in denial about how addicted they are. Most smokers think, "I'm not addicted, I could quit at any time."

To me vises like drinking alcohol and smoking is a sign of weakness. A person who is too weak to handle life's demands turn to a temporary fix that ends up becoming a longtime if not lifetime problem. A strong person doesn't need to use the things.
The same can be said for people who start using drugs. It's not worth it.

People start smoking for various reasons. First, they are curious because they have seen other people doing it. Secondly, perhaps they have seen it done in a movie and thought it looked cool. Friends of theirs might smoke, so they want to fit in. Their parents might smoke, or just one of them and that might be the only life they know. Again, there are many reasons. Why people keep on smoking who know the risks associated with it, who knows, might just me addition. Hard habit to break!

As a lifelong smoker here's why - amongst other things...
Its an appetite suppressant. You are never alone with a Strand!
It's the tobacco that counts. It keeps your hands warm.
Its a pain killer. Its a pick me up. It helps keep you awake when you just have to stay up all night. It's something to do with your hands n a lot more socially accceptable than pickin yer nose.
Oh yeah and it stops the cravings for nicotine.(Addictive persons please note).
I would go on but I don't have the time or space.

These days everything is bad for example:
Drinking
Smoking
Drugs
Sun
Red Meat
Caffine
Unprotected Sex
Saturated Fats
Additives and Preservatives
And the list goes on.
Basically a majority of the things we do are bad for us but it does not stop us from doing them.I bet you have done or had at least one of the things on that list.If you havent you are not human!

There are a number of reasons. They may think that it is the cool thing to do, perhaps peer pressure, perhaps a nervous habit, perhaps feeling that if they are over-weight that this may help in curbing their appetite, or perhaps to impress someone of the opposite sex. Frankly they are just too dumb to think of another alternative than to get involved in bad habits.

Because people are idiots!
One man may smoke, another man may jump off a tall building and fall to his death, another will shoot their best friend for something they said about their girlfriend. All stupid.

They start because they want to look "hard". They can't stop because it's addictive. It takes a person with brains to look beyond appearances.
Sorry Muhammed Ali - I think there's just as much smoking in other cultures!
