I have had both and I am going to say Labrador Retriever. But thats because they fit me better and my life style. The Shepherd is more of a guard dog and are not has friendly as the Lab. Labs are very dog and people friendly naturally. The Labs also live for their master's attention and affection. The Lab has an easier going personality and they are very versatile. I just think they a better family dog.

Both are good dogs. German Shepards are very loyal and can be trained easily.

German Shepard for sure =) there personalities are great there playful and very energetic. They are great guard dogs and are very friendly to live with.
