I have hads cats a lot in my life and I cannot stand them. Who do they think they are? I hasten to add that I will continue to have them. These two that I have right now are two that I rescued from the pound last year. There they were sitting on Death Row (they are way adults and no one would have adopted them) and the little blacka dn white bobtail chose me: I was standing there in that room looking over the 150 or so kitties and she kept putting her little arm out to bang me on my head and scream at the top of her lungs "Get me the hell outta here right this instant!". I complied. She wasn't even "my type". The second cat I took home that day was an afterthought. I felt I had been rather railroaded into the bobtail so I wanted to see one that I was going to make the decision about: a big scraggy looking orange tabby barncat around 20 lbs who was shoved way out of sight from everyone and he was just biding his time. HE was my choice, not vice versa. I get them home scared as to what I had gotten myself into. A year later we all cohabitate in my city apartment. They never go outdoors and they don't seem to want to. They get along terrifically well with each other and me, too. All I have to do when I am home is say "Cut it out" or "stop" and they at least look at me. Sometimes they really DO stop whatever it is... The bobtail is the willful one who now won't jump up on the table in my presence; she is smart enough to go ahead and do this fun thing when I am gone though because there is evidence that she has done this (like the tablecloth is scrunched around).I have freinds who recommend using a water squirter on them but they really don't do anything that bad that all I have to do is get up and start heading in their direction. They are good but are they smart or dumb? One thing's sure. As soon as I even head near the cabinet in the kitchen where their treat food is kept, they know to start begging pathetically.

I think the gist is - you can teach the cat to understand what you want - to associate the command with the action - but you cannot _force_ the cat to do the action each time you issue the command. If you have lots of treats the cat loves, you can manage to invoke the action almost every time you say the command - until you skip too many treats.

And then, there are cats that will do things you ask them because they love you and they want to. That does not mean that they will "climb" when you command them, if they are, say, sleeping or eating at the time - but they will come off things they are doing, or respond to questions (my cat will say a specific meow each time I call his name - whether or not he will come to me, he will acknowledge my call; he will be affectionate when I am, he surely understands the words "breakfast" and "dinner", whether or not I am anywhere near to his food-serving sites).

Ah, yet another human labouring under the delusion that we can be trained. Listen buddy, we only stick around because you have opposable thumbs. Just treat us as the most important beings on the planet, and all will be fine.

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

Cats don't learn words. They learn the sounds of the words. Easiest thing for a cat to recognize is its name. My sister's cat's name is Bob...it's the only word he'll even acknowledge when you say it to him. The tone of your voice is another thing they can learn....soft or normal tone of voice should be used when the cat is being good. Raise your voice and be stern when they're doing something they shouldn't. Works for my cats.

You can train them not to do things. Pick one word as your signal word and at first say the word in a loud firm voice as you stop them from doing whatever behavior you don't want e.g. push them down off counter/furniture, stop them clawing and move to scratch post, stop playing if they claw or bite. As you continue to do this they begin to know that word means you don't want them to do that behavior.
My word is HEY!-all I have to do is say it and they will stop the undesirable action.
You cannot train cats to do specific things,though-just enjoy the naturally funny things they do.

Ahhh, I see that you have bought into that Urban Legend that cats can be trained.

Actually, it is the cats that train us .... they purr, they pounce, they poop, they preen, they shed, they shred ..... and we lavish them with love and affection and attention and fuzzy mice and tuna and wet cat food and expensive cat trees.

The very best way to get a cat to come when you call is to open a can of tuna. Works every time.

Purrrrrrrrrr

You CAN train a cat but it is harder than a dog. My cat understands my words, when I go to feed him he sits nicely and looks up at me and I say "do you love me??" and he will immediately rub up against my legs then look at me again and I say "are you sure you love me?" and he will do it again. When I say NO to another cat of mine he meows back at me as if to say, "I know you are NOT telling ME NO!" but when I look at him and stearnly say NO again he will listen to me and not do whatever it is he is doing. For cats its repitition and association with certain things. It takes patience but it CAN be done.

to train a cat is a most difficult thing to do because cats don't really listen to human as they are too independent..
