My cat is about 6 1/2 7 months old. I got him neutered a couple of weeks ago. I am just wondering how long after do they calm down, because I thought this was suppose to help them.

It's still a kitten. It helps them cope with kitty puberty, but right now it is still just a kitten.

The process has a progressive calming affect over the months/years and makes the adult cat more "calm" ... and usually fatter.

What do you mean about "calming down"?

If it means your cat is aggressive, then you need to train him to direct his attention to acceptable things; neutering will help there - but I don't think it will do the trick all on its own.

If it means your cat is overactive, meaning very playful... that's the first answer.

In both cases, spending some play time with the kitten (like, at least half an hour a day, maybe in a couple of session) will definitely help - because you will get his excitement when you are ready to face it, and the cat will be calmer at other times (he will know you care for him and will be looking forward to the next play session). Since I started such evening sessions, I can even sleep the whole night through.

Oh, and btw, playfulness may, in some male cats, be increased after neutering, rather than decreased by it - I have seen it often enough to be certain that the effect is not even rare. Aggression should drop, but playfulness... Not very certain (I'm talking of cats that are 5 or 6 or 7 years old - they still act like kittens; I should guess that when the same cats are double those ages they may calm down considerably...

Give it time! They will whine down but some cats just have their own personality and are just playful little critters. Yes, this is supposed to help them but SOME cats just don't settle down, some got a playful KICK into their DNA when they were in the womb and it just stays with them. I have one and she's skittish and just rowdy, (not aggressive)even after getting spayed but a little better than before!

Kittens are bouncy, pouncy, floppy. perky, peppy, zippy, scratchy, shreddy, fuzzy, furry, funny, cute, purry and adorable. They are not calm. Most cats calm down by the time they are 9 or 10 years old -- At least ours have.
