How can you tell the difference btwn a heart problem and regular gas. I just had an awful twinge (3, actually) in my chest right about where my heart should be. It wasn't dull like gas, but really sharp. Like someone poked me with a needle. But it went away, and my heart was beating normally right after the pain. And about ten minutes later I burped. But my whole family has heart problems, so I wonder if I need to get this checked out?

(They all have cholesterol problems too, but I don't) (I'm 21)

I'm fairly healthy, but I'm only just getting back into exercizing. I gained about five pounds during the summer cause I kept my old eating habits, but didn't exercise, and only just lost two of them. I bike every day about 1.5 miles, and do some light exercise about twice a week.

I've had twinges before, but not really any shortness of breath, EXCEPT, sometimes I would be afraid to breathe because it hurt....

Good advice in the other answers--as in "when in doubt-check it out"--but at 21-very unlikely U have a heart attack--also with a heart attack, almost 100% of the time there is shortness of breath with the "pain"--and the pain usually lasts for 10 min intervals or longer--"twinges" do not normally indicate a heart attack--the
"burp" & feeling better after
would suggest to me "gas"-
U ever tried "anti-gas" OTC
or try a mint next time-see if that helps too.

A heart attack will kill you and a gas attack will kill others. OK sorry I couldn't resist.

If there is any doubt you NEED to have it looked at. Go to the ER they will hook you up to a EKG, take blood and put you on a stress test and also do a artery blood draw 3 times every 6 hours. It is not comfortable, but it is better than having an heart attack. I have had these tests ran and there was nothing wrong with me, do not play with this!

Pain on the left side of chest and left arm going numb, shortness of breath and sweating are some of a heart attack. Sometimes pain can creep up from the lower back.

If you are worried go to a doctor, you can get a blood and high blood pressure tested. You can buy a high blood pressure monitor. To be accurate you can record it twice a day, everyday for 1 month. A one time test might not be accurate.

gas trouble leads to heart attack. we must not eat potato, drumstick, milk and other gas producing food. All men having heart attack means they would have affected by gas trouble. If we have no gas trouble means there will be no heart attack.

Since responders on this site are not licensed to practice medicine or give medical advice or diagnosis, it would not be wise to answer your question directly. However, if your family has a history of heart problems, you should go and get checked out.

Its probably not your heart. I have weird chest pains a lot too but its not my heart. It could be heart burn, indigestion, muscle spasms. I would see a doc if it continues
