I used to have a great one for salt dough, but lost it along the way, can someone tell me how to make a nice playdough for my kids? Need rainy day activities now, buying it is too expensive and making it is another activity!!

You can make great playdough so quickly & for next to nothing!

The quantities below make a ball of dough about 10cm diameter. If you have a large pan (e.g. stock or preserving pan) you can simply multiply the quantites. I make it in multiples of 10+ for our local toddler craft group.

The amount of food colouring required is very variable. For example if using blue liquid colouring you may need half a bottle as opposed to a few drops of yellow.

1 cup plain flour

1 cup warm water

half a cup salt

1 tbsp cooking oil

2 tsp cream of tartar

Food colouring, as required

Put all the ingredients into a pan and mix thoroughly. Leave to stand for a few minutes to allow the flour to absorb the water and the lumps to soften. If desired, use a hand blender to give a smoother mixture (optional).

Cook the mixture over a low heat, stirring continuously. Remove from the heat when the majority of the mixture has turned to dough. At this point DON'T PANIC - some bits will look more cooked than others. Knead the dough until smooth. Allow to cool thoroughly, kneading occasionally to stop a skin forming, before placing in an airtight container or bag.

i love this one cause you can eat it too!!
1 C. Peanut butter
1 C. Powdered Milk
1 C. Honey
1 C. Oatmeal
Mix together and play and/or eat.

this one is fun too cause it smeels so good and has fun colors!
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
2 cups boiling water with 1 pkg. Kool-aid (any flavor)
3 T corn oil
1/2 cup salt
1 T alum
just add flour until you get the consistency you want, sometimes you need more.

regular playdough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 T alum
1 cup water
2 T oil
liquid food coloring
Pour dry ingredients into large pan. Stir together to mix. Stir oil and food coloring into the water. Pour liquid into the dry ingredients while mixing, squeezing and kneading the dough. If too sticky, add more flour. Keeps best in the fridge.

also, just for more fun, try this bubble recipe!
1 Cup Water
2 Tablespoons Light Karo syrup or 2 Tablespoons Glycerin
4 Tablespoons Dishwashing liquid

put 2 cups of flour into large saucepan 1 cup of salt 2 cups of water 2 tablespoons of oil 2 tablespoons of cream of tarter and some food colouring mix them all together and continually stir whilst cooking over a low heat.
the mixture will form a dough after 5-10 minutes. remove from the pan and knead well
if you keep it in an airtight container or bag it will last for several weeks

There was one that was great, it used kool-aid. Do a search on kool-aid play dough. It smells pretty and is colorful.

Gack is fun to make and is a weird texture.
I know it uses borax, elmers glue and water, along with a food coloring.

Whatever you do, don't use Koolaid to color your dough. It Stains!

Be very careful about using oils to scent your dough also. Some are toxic if injested. Wintergreen, for instance. And we all know that if it smells good, kids will put it in their mouths.

I think you just use equal parts of water, flour, and salt -- with a few drops of food coloring to make it more eye-catching.
