Your typical 18 hole golf course including club house, out buildings, parking lot and practice range, has a total around 150 to 175 acres. Many are larger a few are smaller. If you measure in square yards a typical hole + distance between holes approximates 500 yds X 80 yds or 40,000 SQ yds, 18 holes uses approximately 720,000 sq. yds. there are 4,840 sq yds in an acre. This represents about 150 acres. add up to 25 acres for the rest and you get 175. Put the holes closer together or make the fairways more narrow & the greens smaller and you could get down to 125 acres.

There are many factors to consider, when deciding on the total acreage needed to develop a gold course. Many people when asked the minimum will respond with 130-150 acres are suitable for golf development, but 160-180 acres is the norm, if it is to be a regular shape. L shaped or unusual shaped courses eat up the acreage. Properties for developed must be seen to make an accurate estimation of the needed size. A property might be and old railroad right of way that is 100 feet wide and 23 miles long, but not capable of even building one golf hole. Some courses are "cart only" and have a different need than "non cart" courses. Environmental lave have gradually made greater portions of the site, off limits to development. 160 "use-able" acres often ends up, 200 or more acres due to safety buffers required for residential areas near or on the course. Another factor in deciding the amount of acreage is who will be the majority of patrons frequenting the course. Are they professional quality, average, par or novice players.

You can have one green played from 18 different tee box locations. It depends on what you want. Normally, you need at least 200 acres to have 18 different decent size holes.

You could cram one in tight in about 30 acres, but you really need more like 50-60 before it would even be considered halfway decent.

Golf destroys natural environments and ruins the habitats of native creatures. Who cares how much space they take up, having them at all is an abomination.
