Hmmm? You are the one always quoting Gen Patton. I'd guess Gen Patton said it best:

"Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood."

The man your refer to is a true coward and should be dealt with accordingly.

I've been there. I'm in Afghanistan now. It's war and it's hard. No matter what you believe in. No matter who you are. But in the end it does separate the true men and woman from the rest.

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." Gen G.S. Patton

I don't know. It's kind of obvious though that he didn't agree with what he witnessed the first time he went to Iraq. I think it's good that he stood up for his convictions. He probably went into Iraq the first time thinking he was there to do good for the Iraqis and his fellow Americans. Then something that we'll never know the answer to obviously changed that opinion. It's not like he was afraid of combat since he was okay going the first time. It must have been a decision made based on his morals. Good for him.

After the war started, he decided he didn't want to go but went anyways to avoid getting in trouble. The second time he took off, I guess he was against the war. At least he had the guts to stand up for his convictions and turn himself in.

Problem is, military law is pretty harsh. It's gotta be. He basically ditched out on his buddies. Bad stuff in the Army.

Sad isn't it. These young kids get conned into believing the lies and can't comprehend what war is going to be like. At least he has the balls to admit that the war was wrong -- or at least it seems that way.

They have these glorified commercials explaining that they'll have an education and a "career"... That's if they can keep their sanity afterwards...

He was evidently somehow unaware of the whol "war" part of the military when he aggreed to receive all his training in exchange for doing some stuff for the army. Once he went to war, he suddenly changed his mind, and only actually wanted the benefits that come with miitary service, not any of the bad stuff.

The reason why this made news is because it doesn't happen very often. You are using one example of a "misdirected soldier".
