Fasting in a spiritual sense is suppose to help focus on what is a center of your life. The best way I have found is a week of fasting where you gradually do without by taking steps. For example no meat on mon, nothing but water to drink on tues, no food on wed, nothing on thurs, and gradually work your way back up. Good luck with the fast though.

I fasted for three days this summer, but my situation was probably a little different from yours.
1) I was alone in the woods with a piece of plastic, a hammock, a sleeping bag, my Bible, my journal, and several devotional books.
2) I had water, so I did not get thirsty.
3) I barely ever got out of my hammock. when I was not in the Word or praying or praising God, I was sleeping.
Your situation is probably not the same, but there are some things you could try
1) Remove temptation. If possible, do not make a possibility to break the fast.
2) Drink water. If you are specifically not drinking water, then that is O.K., but I found it a lot easier to think about God instead of my body if I had water.
3) There is not any real pain. Science tells us that we do not enter true starvation until the third or fourth week of a fast. We lose a lot of weight before then, but we do not do any damage to our body.
4) Your stomach is a spoiled brat. My stomach yelled at me for 24hours straight, then realized that i wasn't listening and gave up because it really wasn't that bad. Ignore your stomach.
5) My fast was one of the best experiences of my life, God bless you during yours!

Yes indeed fasting is not easy.So if you want fasting you should have a good preparaton physically and morally. In 14 hous from dawn until sunset we should avoiding foods, drinks, smoking, and wrong doings .We should control our desires and our lusts.By fasting we comply to our God's instruction. We have many benefits by fasting such as (1)strengthen our faith (2)healthy body because our stomach rest for 14 hours a day (3)rewards from Allah for our good deeds (4)feel as a poor person how we last for hungry and thirsty so we will be more socialize person (5) comply to Islamic obligation for paying Islamic taxes and alms/donation for helping poor persons (6)Allah forgives our sins and make us no sin like a baby (7)Allah gets us free from hell punishment.
A good preparation is before dawn at 3.00 A.M we should have breakfast with enough foods full of vitamine and nutrition including sweet meal and drinks fresh water 3 to 4 glasses..With this preparation we will stand for fasting in a whole day without feeling hungry and thirsty.

You did not mention whether you are a Muslim or not.
In Islam, you are not allowed to drink water or smoke during your Fast.
Firstly, make sure that you get up for the meal before fasting commences i.e. Sehri - remember it is sunnat
Secondly, I make a verbal intention to keep my fast. At the time of making the intention, I ask Allah to help me during the fast. I tell Him to give me the patience and help that I need.
At sehri, I also eat foods that take longer to digest. eg. bananas.
Another thing that is helpful to do: Think about the Day of Judgement and the extreme heat of that day. The thirst on that day will be so great - so the thirst in this world is nothing compared to that. Then think that you are trying to earn Allah's pleasure by remaining hungry and thirsty in this world, so that in the hereafter you will not remain hungry and thirsty through His mercy!
Also, think about the poor who have no choice, but to go hungry and thirsty. At least we have food to break our fast with.
May Allah make it easy for you!

It is the spiritual strength that makes you go on. It's not about food, water and sex. Think of all the poor who are forced to fast because they have nothing to eat. Also, the motive, I am doing this because I love Allah and I hope I will be rewarded. The harder it is, especially that it is hot nowadays here in Egypt, the bigger the reward will be.
You know wat is really hard? Spiritual fasting that has to come first before refraining from eating, drinking and having sex. It is difficult, I admit, to keep cool, be polite to everyone, backbite no one, you know? I am sorry to say this, but I am just being honest. Maybe beause my mind is all focussed on doing this right, I do not pay attention to hunger and thirst.
Good luck :)

Fasting is easier when you have the right mindset.
If I do it along with prayer and meditation...then I do better. if my heart isn't in it...I can't make it at all.
But one point... I DO drink water. That SHOULD be "allowed". But water only...not juice, hot drinks, milk or pop. If I drink those I wouldn't consider it a true fast.

It is always in the beggining.. Couple of days and you will feel better and able to complete whole day.
Make sure that you drink enough of liquid after sunset and have Suhor -early breakfast, before sunrise. It will help you not to feel hunger on a day time

You are right, it is really hard especially where i am as it is starting to heat up, i've had to have some fluids some days as i was getting dizzy, but i'm trying too and getting better at it, praying helps too. And the dawn breakfast is CRUCIAL. Good luck, you'll get there.

once you've done it a couple times, it gets vastly easier.
and yes, on the yom kippur fast, its supposed to be 100%, no water, no nothing. in fact only minimal bathing or hand washing (for bare minimum sanitation) even.
and unlike what some say... on the yom kippur fast its a *TOTAL* fast, no water even, no nothing for 24 hours.
and definitely no smoking (fire, AND consumption)
if you spend the whole day in services, or napping/reading ect, it helps too.
but trust me... once you've done it a couple times it gets suprisingly easy to do it even if your not busy.
at least for me it is.

Water is allowed in fasting. and yes it is hard at first when you are usd to three squares a day + snacks. Do it slowly at first until your body gets used to it. you fast when you sleep and get your 7 to 8 hrs rest.
