I have been on Paxil for what is going on 2 years. In this time I have packed on 75 pounds. I have tried every diet out there and of course I only lose the minimum a week (1.5-2 lbs) Yes, I could exercise, but when I do, it is like my appetite kicks in to overdrive. I am only 5'3 and severly overweight. I cannot afford bypass surgery, but I think it would benefit someone like me that has to have Paxil for the rest of my life. It is the only antidepressant that works for me (Have tried all others) if I miss a day, I get the depression back like maddd. I need to lose about 100 pounds. Does anyone have a suggestion of a real diet (other than gastric bypass) where I can lose this weight and not actually starve my self for carbs. Drugs or stimulants only react with the Paxil, but I need a simple diet pill that won't react with my Paxil. I need help, any suggestions. Believe it or not, I am a very active person, just severly overweight for my height. Thanks.

Go to, http://www.elsonhaas.com/books.html, and order the book, The False Fat Diet. I am on Paxil and I have lost 42 lbs, as of about three weeks ago, since last January 2006. You really don't want to lose it much faster than that.
The best part about the False Fat Diet is that you don't have cravings once you get started with it. I am actually a patient of Dr. Haas'. He is in San Rafael, CA. I have to drive about 100 miles to see him. But, it is well worth it. I had the blood test done that told me what foods I am reactive to. That made it much easier for me to eliminate those foods from my diet from the beginning.
If you are not close enough to see Dr. Haas and have the blood test done, you can figure it out by the process of elimination as he shows in the book.
In the beginning he had me eliminate even foods that I was only mildly reactive to, those that were in the insignificant category on the test results. Now I am able to add some of those back in moderation. I will be leaving off my major reactive foods for the rest of my life. I have had a huge shift in how I view food and no longer wish to have those foods and their havoc in my body.
I fully intend to get off of all medication when I attain my optimum feel good weight.
If you read the book you will see how and why it works and why so many people fail on "regular diets". I don't consider this a diet, but the way I want to eat and feel healthy for the rest of my life.
Let me know what you think after you read the book. You can email me direct at marti1owl@yahoo.com
Good luck,
Marti
P.S. You can use the methods given above, but if you are still eating foods that you react to, you will eventually fail. Again, it is explained in the book. I have been through the "success" and failure thing many times over the years. This time is totally different!

You MUST talk to your doctor right away... that much extra weight is not healthy for your heart. I'm sure you are aware of that and I don't mean to lecture. It's hard to make suggestions because I don't know enough about anti-depressants and drug interactions. Have your doc run a blood panel and check your thyroid as wellas vitamin B. Even if you are not Vit B deficiant, it is possible that it would help you to get weekly injections. Lots of weight loss docs use it to boost metabolism and it also helps with depression, energy and certain other ailments like headaches, migraines and arthritis. Maybe that with a strict physician supervised weight loss plan, exercise (something you like), and some eating habit changes and you should be on your way... It won't come off overnight. 100 pounds could take more than a year. But that means it is healthier and will more likely stay off, too. Best of luck to you!!!

I also gained weight on an antidepressant and my best recommendation for you would be The Zone. You don't need to bother with all their prepackaged food or even buy the book if you don't want to (although it does have some handy recipes) - a quick Google search will tell you just about all you need to know to get started.
The basic idea of The Zone is that you eat the right proportion of carbs to fat to protein to support a healthy hormone balance which in turn fine-tunes your metabolism to optimal performance. Since you are pumping chemicals into your body, those hormones are likely out of whack and need all the support they can get. Best of all, you can still have carbs (just the right kinds) and you aren't starving! :) Good luck.

Yes, although I've heard it slows metabolism, for me, it helped with the melancholy that used to be the underlying intent of my overeating. Sometimes I simply did not devour adequate even though. I misplaced approximately 12 kilos in eight weeks.
