Both are delightful dogs.. the whippet is higher energy, if you want a companion that is always willing to play and have fun..
The greyhound is a couch potato, and would just as soon be an indoor companion..
Both need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy.

Can't answer which is better, as I'm not very familiar with whippets (always makes me think of that Devo song, however). But, I would encourage you to adopt a retired racing greyhound. Even with all the greyhound rescue organizations, a lot of those dogs still wind up being put down when they can no longer race, or when they aren't good racers to begin with.

I don't own one, as I have 1 big dog now, and as I'm single and work full time, 2 big dogs would be a bit much (and never mind the 3 cats). But, I have decided that when my dog passes, I'll get a greyhound. I've seen a lot of them at various events in my town, and they also set up outside PetSmart on the weekends, plus I've done some research.

I have Whippets (and no one EVER sings Whippet, Whippet good to me), and have friends with GHs.

Whippets aren't quite as lazy as a GH and have brief bouts of energy. They do still spend most their time on the couch though!

I love the Whippets and can't imagine not having a few. Sweet sensitive cuddly little things.

Any Sighthound is not going to be as trainable as other kinds of dogs. They are very smart and are often naughty, getting into the most unbelievable things. They are also NEVER EVER to be trusted offlead. They do make up for these things with their personalities though!

And Whippets are not fragile at all, they are bred to run after prey at 30+mph. They are pretty tough and hardy.

Well I'll agree with both Gitemgang and MJ - both are wonderful dogs but you'll have to be a little more specific about what you mean by 'better'. I'm a greyhound gal but have friends with both breeds and the whippets we know are really adorable.

I had a retired greyhound, and they are great dogs. It is a common misconception that they need a lot of room to exercise. They are sprinters; they don't have to be kept busy all the time. I never saw mine run except once when he was bumped by a car. He would trot around, but you can hardly call that running. They only need a little exercise. They do need a fenced yard because they don't understand the dangers of street traffic.
Retired greyhounds generally start at 18 months old. They are well socialized to dogs an humans, they like everybody, very polite. They are quiet, some of them never seem to bark. They are not much as watch dogs, but most bad guys don't know that, and they are big. Very nice dogs.

Unless you are a Devo fan, get the Greyhound. Otherwise, people will drive you absolutely NUTS by singing "If a problem comes along, you must whip it...." EVERY SINGLE TIME you mention to them that you have a Whippet.

Trust me ... this is the voice of experience. And if you do decide to get a Whippet, just give in to peer pressure NOW and name the dog Devo ... it will save time.

They are both supposed to be very nice, friendly, loyal dogs and a joy to have around. A greyhound is much bigger so it depends upon how much room you have in your home and yard which dog you get. Remember, greyhounds love to race so they would need a lot of room. Whippets are quite fragile so I wouldn't recommend having one around rough children.
