As others have asked ... for what? The answer is different depending on whether it is judged on: performance or build quality; for music or video; what you want to play (DVD, CD sure ... but what about DivX, MP3, WMA, DVD-A, SACD, etc); or the intended connection is DVI or HDMI or Component.

The link below provides reviews of a wide range of DVD players. I'd suggest reading here and elsewhere and make your own mind up based on what factors are most important to you.

The highest rated ... but only for DVI output of upscaled DVD video ... is the OPPO OPDV971H which sells for under $200 US (or $220 Can). It beat out players costing into the $000's. I use it for my home theatre, even though I also have a Pioneer Elite DV47Ai universal player I bought used for $450 because it is excellent for music and plays SACD and DVD-A as well as standard CD/DVD.

Denon models: DVD1930CI $350 it is upconversion and uses better processors than most DVD players in the market. It has the capability to give you near 1080p capabilities.

The other model will only up convert to 1080i but does not have the Faroudja progressive-scan decoding engine that the 1930 model has. DVD1730

For that price, might as well go with an HD-DVD player by Toshiba (HD-A1) for $499. It will play all of your old DVD's plus the new Hi-Def ones if you decide to purchase any (I am sure you will once you see the picture difference).
