Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of fluid on the brain, causing pressure to be exerted on the brain and cranial vault. It is treated in a variety of ways, the most common being a "shunt" or tube that is inserted into the cranial vault and into the brain to drain the excess fluid into another cavity..like the abdomen.
Hydrocephalus can be present at birth, or may be present in older children as a result of trauma.
