According to hadith, in the month of Ramadan I offer 8 raka's of prayer (salat - TAHAJJUD/TARAWIH) in the later part of the night followed by 3 raka's of Witr. Usually I offer Isha salat in early part of the night (between 2000 hours to 2359 hours). Am I in the right track in the light of Sunnah of our beloved prophet Muhammad (PBUH)? Can I term those 8 raka's TARAWIH? Because in the hadith it is not spelt out wheather it is TARAWIH or TAHAJJUD. I also know from hadith that the Prophet (PBUH) prayed TARAWIH in the mosque for three days only. Seeing the growing attendance and interest of the people, He stopped going to the mosque. Is this the same 8 raka's that He performed individually at night?
Please post me the detailed answear to remove confusion from my mind.

As-salaam-mu-alaikum
Taraweeh salaat is sunnat. It is performed during ramadaan at night during every night of Ramadaan.
The taraweeh consists of 20 rakaats- normally read 10 * 2 rakaats.
The tahajjud salaat is between 2 and 20 rakaats.
It can be performed throughout the year. Tahajjud can be performed before or after witr; whereas taraweeh is performed before the witr salaat.
Women can perform taraweeh at home, whereas men should preferably perform taraweeh in the masjid in congregation.

According to sound hadith the Prophet (PBUP) used to pray 8 rakahs of tarawih. I am very sure of that. Most of the times he used pray in the mosque but some nights he used to pray at home because he knew that if he continuously prayed in the mosque his followers would take tarawih as a fard( compulsory)

second part of the question is that is it tahajjut or tarawih -
in an hadith - innal a'amal bin niyat
meaning - actions are judged according to intensions.

so before you start the prayer you have to make your intension what are you praying - tahajjud or tarawih. and another thing i am not very sure of the timing of tarawih but i think it is best prayed with Isha but i know for sure it is better to pray tahajjud in the 3/4 part of the night. 2 -3 am.

Tarawih and Tahajjud are two different voluntary prayers. Tarawih (also called Qiyamm) can be prayed any time after Ishaa till fajr, alone or in group, any even number between 2 and 20 is O.K. although 8 or 20 are the sunnah of prophet and sahabbah. Tahajjud is also a prayer you do at night (done usually before fajr), but it should be preceeded by some sleep (you wake up especially to pray it), alone or in group, any even number of rakaat is O.K. Witr (means odd numbered rakaat) should be the last salat you do in any single night. So, you can do it after Isha if you will not pray again after tell fajr. Or after Tarawih if you will not pray again after tell fajr. Or after Tahajjud if you will not pray again after tell fajr. Any more question, e.mail me. Gazaka Allah khayran for your care to pray.

He (PBUH) had some sense, but you guys don't have. it is not any number of rakas important. It is how much devotion you are praying and what intensity is there in your thinking makes the difference. If you are having devotion in mind even one surah will be good enough.
