In the end it's because Japanese products are more reliable than American products. Drive a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord vs a Chevy Malibu or Ford Fusion and you'll see what I'm talking about. Fit and finnish is much better on the Camry and Accord, plus the Malibu and Fusion can't match the Camry's 268 hp engine.
Also American companies tend to "badge engineer" a lot of their vehicles. For example EVERY Lincoln is a rebadge of some Ford. By rebadge I mean they are mechanically similar and that the only differences are cosmetic.
Lincoln Navigator - Ford Expedition
Lincoln Aviator - Ford Explorer
Lincoln Towncar - Ford Crown Victoria
Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ - Ford Fusion
Lincoln MKLT - Ford F-150
Lincoln MKX - Ford Edge
I think that covers the Lincoln lineup.
Also another factor is that American automakers have to deal with the Union whereas Japanese automakers don't.

Just go drive 100k mi Ford Taurus...doesn't matter just pick one.
Then go drive a 100k mi Chevy Lumnia
Then a 100k mi Chrysler Concorde
Then a 100k mi Chevy Cavalier
Then a 100k mi Ford Escort
Then go drive a 100k mi Toyota Camry and a Corolla
Then drive a 100k mi Honda Accord and a Civic.
The difference you see, feel, and hear is the reason American cars are staying on the lots. The Jap cars are tighter and more solid at this stage in life. People know they can put their hard earned money into these vehicles, drive them for 6 years, then give them to their kids to drive for another 6 years. Then turn around and sell it for 2-6k. That my friends is VALUE!
Keep in mind, they did it to themselves! The American companies GAVE the car industry to the Japanese. They ignored the car market in favor of higher profit SUV and truck sales. Do you get what I'm telling you??? GM, Ford, and Chrysler ALL said "Srew you!" to the American car buyer. They said, "We don't car about building an $18k car with low profit that Americans will love and drive for 150k mi, because we want you to be driving $35k SUV's and p/u's that we make $8k a copy off of!"
Then the UAW stepped in and torched the remaining stumps that the industry had left behind just make sure EVERYone knew that the American car industry is completely dead.
Do you know why the Japanese don't have to pay for health benefits in Japan? It's because Japan has Universal Healthcare!!! And they DO pay for benifits for the TENS of THOUSANDS of workers in America!
If you think a Lexus is simply a "rebadged" Toyota, you are fooling yourself and have obviously never spent any considerable time in either brand. They are completely re-enginered to earn the Lexus badge with leading edge technology.
And yes, they are doing extremely well. A few billion in profits well at that!

Ford, GM, and Chrysler played the cards they were dealt. a few years ago, gas was cheap here in the states, and expensive in Japan. So the American car companies spent their R&D money developing the vehicles that people wanted: SUV's and Trucks. Ford sold over a million full size trucks in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2004. That isn't including the 600,000+ SUV's they sold every year. And they were making tons of money on these trucks. So they let didn't spend a lot on developing slower selling, lower profit midsize cars. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc are based in Japan. In Japan, fuel economy is king. So they spent their money developing the cars that would sell the best for them. And they earned a good reputation for having good cars. Now, Ford, GM, and especially Chrysler have all brought out new midsize cars that are as good as their Japanese rivals, but due to their reputations for not having good cars, they aren't selling well.
Also, every Lexus is a re-badged Toyota, and every Acura is a re-badged Honda, so don't think the Japs aren't doing it too.

That's not really true yet. Sure Toyota finally beat Ford in car sales, but the vehical leaders via truck sales is still GM and Ford. The big perception is total vehical failures (theings falling apart, the vehical stops running ect.) and not percentage vehical failures (which is actually very close).
So Ford makes 900,000 vehicals a month and Honda makes 900,000 vehicals a year. The news reports Ford has a 900,000 vehical recall and Honda has a 100,000 car recall on all their cars made in that year. Just from the gross numbers it looks like Ford is 9 times worse than Honda, but percentage wise Ford would have a recall on 8% of their vehicals and Honda would have a recall on 11% of their vehicals.
Those numbers work another way too. Ford would have to sell 900,000 more vehicals to just get a 8% increase in sales while Honda would need to sell just 100,000 vehicals to get a 11% increase.
Now that more companies are making cars and vehicals are lasting a lot longer, it would be normal for vehical sales to be down. Just look at Volswagon. After their short term second beetle craze died down, their car sales dropped 80%.

they don't rely too much on unions and they know the world market. Ford and Gm focused too much on what they want americans to have, which is horsepower. Back in the 80's, japanese car companies did not use 8 cyl motors. But because our love affair with the cars, we want bigger;8,10,12 cyl; suv/truck-sports car. It wasn't until the late 80's/early 90's the 8 cyl vehicles came into fruition for the japanese. It's what we wanted. Now Gm is asking toyota for assistance.

In a word RELIABLE! Everyone in my family has a Toyota and have had nothing but good luck with them. I was a Ford man at one time but got sick of spending my money on repairs when I see my buddies do nothing to their cars but change the oil. If you want worry free driving buy a Toyota!

While Ford and GM are spending money on building a bigger, gas guzzling pick up truck, and then firing a third of their employees, Toyota and honda are building more efficient alternate fuel vehicles.
