The difference between Shia and Sunni can be determined by the way they hang their toilet paper. The Shia like it overhand and the Sunni, underhand. Sunni and Shia fanatics will break into each others houses and check the bathroom, the toilet paper can't be hidden and a Jihad begins if they don't like what they see. I don't blame them. I get pissed off too if the toilet paper is the wrong way.

I am not a moslem so I cannot answer the question but as far as people with in the same fighting and killing each other...look at the history of the British and the IRA--Chirstians and Catholics fighting and killing each other. It happens. In Iraq, I believe the fighting has more to do than with religion itself, it also has to do with power within the government...the sunnis (a minority) do not want to live under a Shia rule and vise versa...there are also ethnic divisions between various populations in Iraq...ie, Kurds, Arabs, etc.....and also other religions not just Islam....ie Iraqii Chaldeans (Christians) and even Jews who live there. So as far as I see it, Iraq is a very diverse nation that is divided on many levels and it looks like a civil war even though the pres doesn't want to say it.

I am an Indian national and a Hindu by religion. Today is Oct 2, birthday of Mahatma (great soul) Gandhi.
Gandhi perhaps knew the answer to the question of killings in the name of religion. The problem is not that any of the religions preaches killing. It is the followers who decide that they can achieve some religious objectives by killing non-believers etc.
Gandhi therefore preached what no religion did in clear terms, namely that, noble objectives can not justify wrong means. He not only preached the importance of righteous means, but also meticulously stuck to his non-violent struggle for securing freedom of the country, and never budged from the non-violent path even in the wake of opposition from own people, who wanted short cuts and other compromises with the non-violence principle in order to speed up the process of achieving the objective.
Unfortunately, the followers of various religions, and Muslims in particular, believe that any religious objective by itself justifies any kind of means, including killing of brethren.
The Shia-Sunni problem in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan etc has perhaps much more to do with internal as well as external politics than with religion as such,

It is a civil war unleashed by the powers who are not in control. They create trouble between Shia and Sunni so that they may control both. Its a trick used throught the History to control new territories with least casualities. Names may differ, in Iraq, it is called Shia Sunni war, in Ireland, its the Christians. and so on.. We are dumb to accept that and the people are innocent to fal for such things... Its speaks much of the loal leaders who are willing to kill each other without any love for their nation....

I am not a Muslim but I can hazard a guess. Christianity has also the problem of slaughtering others. The religions you mentioned that have peace are based on a belief that spirituality, although based on a higher being, is obtained from within yourself not from an external source (catholic confession for example) so you cant sin, then quickly pray and be absolved of all your sins. They also do not believe that if you do not follow their specific way you are doomed to burn, an unbeliever and a threat. In fact Buddha said something like 'do not follow me blindly, question everything and follow your heart'. Imagine the pope or a muslim cleric saying that! Muslims and christians also have fanatics, zealots, who believe that by killing non-believers you can ensure yourself a pretty smart 3bedroom apartment with a couple of hot babes when you get to heaven. The other peaceful denominations you mentioned have the utter respect of all life as their foundation. Most of their followers are vegetarians because they do not believe in taking the life of a living being, let alone to satisfy a base desire like stuffing a burger into your mouth.
So I believe these three things:
1) acceptance of other denominations,
2) acceptance of questioning (not blind faith) and
3) respect for all living things
are what separates the religions that lead to peace and love from those that lead to fear, hatred and death.

the answers to all of ur questions will be found if u re-visit History 50-70 years back. for since then did all the unrest really start. there are both shi'ites and sunnis living in Far East, West, India -- but we have never seen them kill each other. may be someone is trying to make the civil war look like a religious war. and moreover, people with bloodier histories for centuries should not find fault with others.

Simply told, Shia's have reached some kind of agreement with USA and Sunni's see that as a treachery, and in Islam a traitor who works with occupators should be killed.
So, it is USA who started this war, of course you dont need me to mention to you how Christians used to fight among themselves and with others for centuries.

actually,ur right we have a sort of difference in our religion but it doesn't mean the every muslim in every part of the world hate sunni's.As far as ur question is that why iraq's muslims are killing eachother?,it would be because of the demolishing of the law & order in iraq.Another reason could be that ,as u know we are very much devoted to our riligion and sects and it could be the reason for their conflicts but i think we should also be like other religion
can u just tell me ur age, sex, and frm where u r?coz i like ur thinking and ur question too,i think ur a good person

Different sects different believes, different practise. So these two sects are abit extreme among themselves, who are you to interfere? Theres more than just these two sects in islam if i may aknowledge you. And according to the religion there will be only one sect which will allowed in heaven and THAT IS ISLAM. The real one. Instead of trying to cause more trouble and raise silly thoughts regarding islam why not you ask about christianity? Are you a racist?
