When I burn CD's their volume level is low. When playing them in my car stereo or home system I have to turn the volume higher than with store bought CD's to get the same listening level.

You may have Sound Check enabled. Theoretically it's supposed to keep volume level consistent for disk you are burning. But I find that such disks the volume level is always low. If it's unchecked then you will have loud and soft tracks which isn't desirable either. Suppose you could use equalizer to tweak the levels on each song to get a more consistent volume. I use Audacity to edit my mp3 files, could also use this to set volume levels.
