Traditional engagement gifts are usually the frivolous things, stuff that's more sentimental than practical. The wedding gifts cover the household goods like linens and small appliances.
Think about what you want to spend, then look at something that they can keep as a memento of their wedding. It's even better if it something that can be personalized.
Picture frame
Clock
Gift certificate for a dinner for two at a nice restaurant
Romantic couple's figurines or plaques
Wedding keepsake box or album
A nice bottle of wine or champagne
Set of 2 crystal glasses (wine or champagne preferably)

If they have a registry, then select something off that in your desired price range. If they don't, then use your best guess about what they like, and their hobbies to get some more ideas.

OMG I got so screwed over by not getting any gifts !

NO seriously , I never hear d of anyone getting a gift because they got engaged. After all they did receive a nice ring from their soon to be hubby.

Picture frame would be nice - A nice stationary to let others know of the engagement.

I think it would be hilarious if you got her a DVD of one of these movies: So I Married AN Axe Murderer or The War of the Roses. Seriously, I would get one of those movies and put it in a box with a small envelope. Inside the envelope put two tickets to a concert or an event you know they would love to attend. Everyone else will get them practical gifts. Yours will be remembered.

gather "the bride to be" a donation from your family and see how much money you can gather up to contribute to the wedding..on behalf of your family..my mother had 11 siblings and each had several children..you can only imagine..they were so generous and so happy to here I was getting married and happy for me ...my grandfather paid in cash for my wedding dress...but we are all like that ,..my cousin graduated from St. Mary's University and we all gathered together and pitched in to buy him his graduation ring...So I think that is the best gift ever..because it helps..out..I have the best family ever because we are there for each other..We are totally Blessed...Thank you Jesus...
