Ok, i'm 24 and getting a cavity drilled tommorow. I've never had a cavity before and not tottally sure what to expect. To be honest, i don't like the idea of haveing a needle jammed into my gums. How bad does it hurt without the novacaine?

A good dentist will not even let you see the needle. It's just a little pinch. The only thing that really hurts is if the anesthetic is significantly cooler than body temp. Otherwise they give you a local so you don't even feel the needle. Go with the novocaine. You'll heal up faster actually. So sense stressing out your nerves.

it will be quite painfull without the novacaine...

depending on how deep your cavity is...

its not that bad getting the shot , its over in like 2 seconds.

plus nobody likes having a needle jammed in there gums.

look at this way if some 9 year old girl can take it, so can you

good luck

I'm a huge needle phobe myself and I say take the novocain. Of course it depends on how skilled your dentist is, if he is really good and it's just a small cavity you should be able to handle it without.

the novacaine does not hurt at all the needle i mean the most you may feel is a small pinch but to not get it and your having a cavity filled thats gonna hurt like hell ecspecially the drilling part

Depends how bad the cavity is. If it's just a small one, that will take 5 min. to fill, then I wouldn't recommend the novocaine. I had my first cavity at 30 and didn't have the novocaine. Then again, I went through childbirth two months prior!!!!

I could not imagine going to the dentist without novacaine... I guess you have to weigh the feeling of a needle with the feeling of a drill...
I have always gone with the needle :-)

The pain from the needle from the novacaine will not even compare to the pain you will feel being drilled without any!

You will be fine. Its probably not a bad cavity :-) some fillings take 10mins some take 30mins. So dont worry trust me keeping your mouth open for ages hurts more than a needle. Dont worry about it. Some of the little kids i see are more brave than you. Nah joking, you will be fine. Needles are only a small pinch and then thats over.

I went to the dentist the first time 2 weeks ago and I did not know they were going to give me a shot, when I arrived I was very scared and asked my dad if they had to give me the shot. My dad replied yes because when you get a shot of novcacane it does not compare to the pain of drilling a hold in your mouth. Before they gave me the shot they put some numbing gel so I did not feel it and the dentist said you night feel a small pinch and I did but it was a weird feeling iv never felt it before and but it was not bad at all and now I kinda like the feeling of it

I'm a dentist.

It hurts like hell.

Moreover, if your dentist offers you "Novocaine", get up and leave. Novocaine is no longer used as a local anesthetic. Lidocaine or Articaine/Septocaine are the drugs of choice.

Finally, you're not getting a "cavity drilled". The doctor is going to remove the decay from your tooth and restore it.
