I wanted to stop breast pumping after four months. I was pumping four times a day. I stopped pumping on 9/30 cold turkey and on 10/1, I had to pump after 36 hours of not pumping. My breasts were so tender and engorged that I was about to cry. I couldn't even hold my baby close to me.

Can I stop pumping and let nature take its course and just pump when engorged or is it better to continue to pump but only once a day and then every other day as a gradual decline?

I pumped exclusively for my baby for a lil over a year and what I did to stop pumping, was to extend the length of time I would go without pumping. I used to pump every 2 hours then I went to 4, then 6 etc. until it got to 24 hrs etc. I never got engorged doing it like that. Some people say you can wrap them really tight. My cousin went that route and she never got engorged neither. You could contact a lactation consultant as well, because I know theres some medicines also some natural herbs you can take to dry your breasts up. I wish you luck. P.S. DO NOT FEEL BAD IF YOU WERE PUMPING ONLY, NO ONE KNOWS YOUR SITUATION!! Some women can NOT put their baby to their breast for whatever reason.

I know I shouldn't be answering this question, but my friend's wife is going through this exact problem. If I remember correctly, he said something about her slowly coming off the pump. I guess that means she is reducing the number of times she pumps until she is dry(?). I don't know if this helps, but stopping cold turkey doesn't sound right. I think you need to ease yourself off the pump so you aren't in so much pain.

Hope this helps. (I'm just a guy trying to help, is all.)

I probably would pump just enough to relieve you. It might be best to stop gradually so you wont be in so much pain. It shouldn't take long.

Yikes - why were you pumping and not just nursing your baby? I imagine it would be horrible pumping all the time like that. Can you wean down by nursing? Seems like you're asking for infections and such not nursing or pumping. call la leche league's local volunteer. They know so much!

call your doctor and get a prescription to dry you up and pump a little at a time until you dry up, about two weeks.

Don't suddenly stop. It's way too painful. Gradually taper off.
