Nothing really - it's what they do.

Why would living in the country not be an option for keeping a cat indoors? That's just plain silly.

You can do the bell collar thing but im curious as to why keeping him/her indoors not an option?
what does living in the country have to do with anything?
what if someone decides to shoot your cat?
or pick him/her up because it looks like a stray cause you live all the way out there?
or what about diseases from other animals?
or another animal decides him/her looks good for a meal?

No. It's their nature that's why so many people are not fond of them. The cat is the only animal that kills for sport and not out of necessity. Also, you say you won't keep it indoors. I hope you use a leash on it then. Many areas now require by law that cats as well as dogs be on a leash. Cat owners should respect the rights of others but, seldom do.

you will have to put a collar with a bell on it but make the collar loose enough to come off if the cat gets caught up in some object. cats stalk birds and the bell will alert the birds the cat is coming

why can you not keep a cat indoors in the country...that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! You cannot train a cat to not hunt...it is in their nature..as long as you let it outdoors it will keep on killing. Cats contribute to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of birds per year.

Keep it indoors and if that's not an option then just let it be. It is in your cat's nature to hunt.

Cats are natural predators there is no way to stop the killings. If you want it to stop keep the cat indoors. Mine are very happy indoors.

If the cat is around to keep the mice out, a collar isn't an option. You'll just have to live with it. Cat's hunt, it's what they do to survive.

Have you thought about building it a cat run? It can be outside but kept safely away from the birds. Being in the country, you could build a very large one with chicken wire.

Just make sure your cat is up to date on its shots. I had 2 cats and they got a hold of a bat. I got worried and called the vet, my cats weren't up to date on their rabies and the vet said I was better off putting them to sleep cause they wouldn't show sympthoms for 6 months and could spread it in the mean time. Also being outside it could get hit by a car. There is alot more to worry about other than birds.
