Joshua 1:6-9
1:6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Does this apply today?

Good question. I think this does apply to today. Especially with youth, who are so intimidated to conform. People need to stand up for what is right even when faced with ridicule. If you see my answers I think you will see I speak my mind.

I would like for people to read 2 Thessalonians 2:1-13. I think it is very relevant to today. God bless you.

I'm not afraid to be strong and courageous because as a Christian I know that to depart from this body is to be with the Lord.

As to your second question about the passage from Joshua, it applies today only in a different sense. For instance, in the Old Testament when Daniel was thrown in the lion's den God protected him from harm. After Jesus came and died and rose again many Christians were thrown to the lions and killed. That's because now we have a different witness to give to the world. We are called to suffer for Christ's sake. Jesus said we would be his "witnesses" to the world. The Greek word that is translated as "witness" is the word from which we get our English word martyr.

That doesn't mean that God won't protect us. Jesus told us that not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from his Father's will. It just means that if God wants to use a particular person as a sign to unbelievers by letting that person die rather than recant their faith in Jesus, then He can do that knowing that the faithful person will immediately be translated into Heaven and their suffering will be turned to eternal joy in His presence.

Sure, I suppose. Even verse 8, but not because I am necessarily a Christian, but because I admire commitment to a discipline and steadfastness.

I'm not a cowardly bigot that needs to suck sh*t out of the bible and spew it at the most vulnerable.
