Word 2003 give you the option of "disabling options after Word 97."

In Word 2003, cl Tools, cl Options. cl the Save tab.
Near the bottom you will see where to indicate this.

Try transfering the file onto a USB memory key, or floppy disk, what ever, then if the Microsoftword2003 is on another computer, put it on that computer and try that, or if it's on the same computer, delete the old Microsoft Word, and install the new one, then put the file back on from the USB.

By opening the Word97 file with the Word2003 application, all your formatting should be preserved without additional effort.
