pacificwaves8,
Great subject!

EDIT:
The Old Testament Law:
Deuteronomy 28:58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee.
61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.
63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.

The New Testament Law
Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Jesus suffered the Wrath of God, since there was no man to fulfill the 600+ laws that were brought upon them. All of God's wrath was poured upon Jesus, so that anyone who was guilty could escape the same thing.

Paul likened the Law to an old strict schoolmaster:
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Since the old Law could not bend, it was weak to the saving of men.

But Jesus Christ was perfect in that Law, and became sin for us, though He did no wrong, and was Resurected for His fatih, and thus became our connection to salvation by faith.
Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

And that's how we are saved. And that's how we are to be Christians. Not by our perfection to rules, but by faith we gain Grace, and His Spirit dwells within us, as we are the children that live for Him.

Sermon on the mount: Matt. 5.

The "old" laws were being interpreted deviating (still being done today! Also with Christ's teachings!!) from there original meaning.

Jesus explains that the two first and FOREMOST commandments were:
to love God with ALL our being and above all "things", and to love our neighbours as ourselves, even if their may be our enemy.

Any laws or interpretations not in line with those two were invalid.

Just imagine! If all Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Sihks and Jews would willingly (not because they have been told) act out of compassion toward the "others" (as they ALL were taught!) there truly would be peace on Earth!

Love, as in compassion and forgiveness, is the answer - whatever the question!

Matthew 5, 6, 7 The old law was God's law for the people of Israel and the new covenant is the new law that Jesus taught in the NT the commands are throughout it.

My favourite book in the Bible! Matthew! Chapter 5!

New law....is the old law fulfilled. The greatest commandment of all is "love thy neighbour as thyself"!

If you have an opportunity....read the entire book of Matthew some time....it's fabulous! Very uplifting!

the sermon of the Mt. can be found in Matt. the fifth through the seventh chapter.
the 'old law' was for GOD's chosen people at the time and was pictural of the 'new law'.
the 'new law' is what GOD's son gave to those he taught and is what we follow today.
we, today do not live under the old law, however, we do (or should) attempt to live under its principles in accordance with the new law.

Matthew 5. Jesus said, about the law, that He was the fulfillment of it. The bible tells us that the law was a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. That is, the law shows us that we are sinners, unable to keep the entire law. That is why we need a savior.

Faith in Christ absolves us from the stains of our sin. That is what the new covenant is...it's imputed righteousness by our faith in Christ.

The old law is no longer.

The church was given the authority by Christ to make any necessary new laws.

For observing those, we are still responsible.
