The whole thing is about a handful in size, and usually blood tinged from broken capillaries around the cervix. You can lose good size chunks throughout pregnancy, but it will regenerate itself if your body's not ready. Straining for anything can cause you to lose some, but it can also be a s ign of cervical activity (i.e., softening or dilation) so call your doc and see if he wants to see you to be sure. Congrats momma!

Just to let you know, your mucus plug has no real bearing on when you will go into labor. Some women see parts of them throughout their pregnancy, and some never see them. I saw part of mine in my first pregnancy, but didn't go into labor for another 2-3 weeks. The next 2 pregnancies, I never saw them. So, it's nice to know what it is, but you never know when labor will start.
So, sit back and relax. These are the last few days and weeks that the baby will be inside you! Soon, you will be holding that little bundle of joy, and changing diapers, and feeding, and changing diapers, and feeding...
Good luck! And congrats on your baby!

You don't feel it and many women lose it without even realizing it or seeing it. Labor can be as far as 2-3 weeks away after losing the plug.

some say you lose your mucus plug and don't go into labor for a couple days, in my case I lost it and started having contractions a couple hours later. It looks like yellow mucus with a tinge of blood in it, and is very thick.

sounds gross but if you describe what you saw it would help....usually if you loose your plug you go into labor within the next week or two so if you did I would let you doc know (not immediately just next time you see him)
