I have always thought the following: if people simply die and lose consciousness forever, then what is the harm in trying out your favorite religion? You have nothing to lose, so why not take a shot at heaven, even if you think the chance of it existing is 1 in 10^googleplex. To answer your question, that is why being an atheist is hopeless.

I don't believe that atheist are dumb and hopeless. There are some really nice true atheists that I have met on this site and they have purpose and intellect. You are an impostor. I don't believe the rightful owner of ur avatar would be happy with this. Be nice. God bless!

They're just rebelling from what mommy and daddy crammed into they're heads during childhood, and can rarely explain they're choice in an intellectual manner. It's either an insult, like most of the answers given, or the same old he's a myth, the bible is bs, blah blah. They don't know how to reject some things, and accept others.

It is pretty obvious that we are of a divine nature. We have been given this life to have joy. Just hold a sleeping baby and listen to his breathing. How can you doubt in a loving Heavenly Father? Who has blessed us with the gift of life and the renewal of with each and every new birth of a child.The fullness of joy will not be here though as this is not our home. We were spirit before body and will return as spirit at death. Resurrection brings body and spirit together for eternity. It's the Plan of Salvation. Ask a Mormon, they have all the answers.
