To truly have an open mind, a person must accept the possibility that he may be wrong. No one who is truly a Christian can be open minded. To be a Christian, you can have no doubt that what you believe is true. **** Christians right in their retarded asses.

Yes, the last sentence didn't really further the argument, but it's very hard to remain civil when someone believes in invisible men from outerspace with no evidence. No one should expect an atheist to have a civil debate with a Christian. With no proof on their part, there is no reason for us to take them seriously.

you seek proof? show me proof there is no God, and once that is obtained i guess you can say whatever you want. You know nothing of being a Christian

Christians are very often not open minded. Those that believe in evangalizing non-believers are obviously set on the understanding that they are right, and that any alternative definition of the universe is wrong. The problem with this belief is that it contradicts the human condition. It fails to appreciate the need for man to develop ideas and theories towards their surroundings. If you believe that there is an inherent commonality throughout the human species, then how can you disregard the beliefs of say a people who lived isolated on an island and has never had any contact with the Holy Land? Are these people devoid of spirituallity? Are they doomed? The problem with taking the position that Atheism is more logical than Christianity or another religion suffers from the same criticism you accuse those that follow these religions: you have no proof that there isn't a higher power. The only modern modes of thought that has any validity when taking into account the vast nature of human thought and creativity are those that accept the very spiritual affirmation, "I don't know."

I accept the possibility that I may be wrong, that all of us might be wrong, that there is no God, that believing in something that people have believed for millennia has been worthless. However, I do believe such a God exists, without proof, though Aquinas (Summa Theologica) and C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity) attempt to prove it through logic.
And yes, athiests and theists can have civil debates. It just might not seem possible. Republicans and Democrats are dead set agianst each other, but there have been civil debates with them.

i am an orthodox Catholic. I was baptized into this religion as an infant and raised in it. I left the church for 15 yrs while in my teens. I told God to go to hell. I never stopped believing that He existed but I felt that He hated me and wanted me to suffer. I studied 8 other world religions and went to other churches and talked with other religious people and atheists, wiccas and satanists. After 15 years, I freely choose to come back to the Catholic church. I am VERY open-minded and will listen to anyone and learn about anything. Through my life I have doubted things and questioned more things. 3 yrs ago I decided that I abandoned God but He never abandoned me. I prayed and reconiled with Him and came back to the Church. This was on my own free will. No one forced me to do this. I am greatly pleased that I decided to rejoin the Church. My life has changed and life is great now! I will never leave God nor the Catholic Church again. Of course, all humans are sinners. There are sinners in every congregation, every parish, every diocese, etc. But I look to God, not all the humans for my needs. I do however get irritated when people call me closed-minded, not a free-thinker, not a self-thinker, and especially a retarded ***. My *** isn't retarded, it does what it's suppose to do. Just like the rest of my body. I ask that you keep you silly comments to yourself because they only make you sound retarded.

Added note: I think it's shameful that you can't have a civil conversation with people you've never met. It's that retarded?

I am a Christian and I have an open mind. I have pondered the thought that what if I was wrong. My answer ... if I am wrong and its all untrue, well, I haven't lost anything by being a good person. The thing is though, I have had so many personal experiences that tell me otherwise, I know that Jesus Christ died for me and God is real and I know his presence.

So sorry you don't know me but think me to be retarded. Oh well.

we can have an open mind...but you seem to have a problem with Christian's and what they believe....what is it to you?....I am satisfied in my choice of who I serve...Jesus is my Lord and none other.....I think you are just uneasy around us because you don't have the peace we have or the assurance we have in who we serve...so that leads you to lash out on us.....why else would you spend so much time bashing Christians.....it is sad really......and yes I know you are going to bash me for saying this and I really could care less.......words don't hurt ......but do know that God can take all your anger away.....and you say one cant have a civil debate with a christian if one is atheist...that is not true , my father is atheist and we talk and have no problem having a discussion...it is called tolerance and respect for each others beliefs...something which you don't have...

Once you achieve a steadfast faith, a sure and certain knowledge that Jesus is the Son and Savior, you can then open your mind to understand and seek knowledge of other beliefs. It then no longer challenges your faith, but becomes a simple quest for understanding. So, while your premise is quite right, your conclusion is rather presumptuous and premature. Good question though. Did you get it from an earlier question like this one?

It doesnt matter what people believe whatever it is they always believe thier correct and their ways are correct. To be a true believer in anything you have to have an open mind but @ the same time understand that what you feel is best for you but others have the right to believe whats right for them.Basically agree to diagree and move on.

I have considered, what if the others are right, and the answer that comes to mind is, if they are right, I am still fine because karma dictates what goes around comes around and I'm being nice , so nice should happen. But if my beliefs are right, then I'm also fine because I am living the golden rule and that is a very good thing in my belief system.

Well let's think about that for a moment. Do you have an open mind? Are you open to the possiblity that when Jesus said He was the only way to God, that He was speaking the truth?

Hm?
