Fecal occult blood, is blood in your stool (feces) that cannot be appreciated by the naked eye.

A fecal occult blood test is one where a small smear of stool is placed on a special small card and drops of a reagent onto the card is placed. If the color changes that indicates the presence of blood.

Fecal occult blood tests (a common brand is Hemoccult) are farily sensitive. They can detect blood in your stool that could be originating anywhere from your mouth to your anus.

Causes for a positive fecal occult blood test are several. Common benign causes are

A meal including meat in the past two days or so.
Rough foods like nuts which can irritate the intestinal wall slightly.

Causes of concern include colon cancer or polyps, stomach or duodenal ulcer, esophagitis and many more. Doctors often do them during a rectal exam as an inexpensive screening test for colon cancer. Home tests are less likely to have false positive results because you can follow a diet free of meats and nuts and get three samples to return to your doctor. (It's easier and less messy than it sounds.)

Fecal occult blood is a term for blood present in the feces that is not visibly apparent. In medicine, a fecal occult blood test is a check for hidden (occult) blood in the stool (feces).
