There really is no other safe place to adjust. The safest place to be is at where you are most comfortable. Leading the most normal life as possible is what you should be looking at. Hospitals and half way houses aren't a place to adjust. All they do is shelter you from living as normal a life as possible. Hospitals are for serious medical issues and just get you stabilized on meds. You may learn a few coping skills there before you would be released home. A half way house isn't used in a mental health matter. They have no doctors or psychiatrists on staff. Keep in touch with your therapist and doctor. If you can't get you meds right, the doctor may put you in the hospital. Mainly, you need to focus on your therapy for adjusting. There should be groups through your counseling center, so ask them about it.

I'm sorry you feel so lost right now. I can, and do relate to how you feel quite often. You should do a google search on what support groups there are for people struggling with bipolar disorder. Maybe if you were to get to a few meetings a week, around other bipolar's, you would feel less panicked, and more in control until the depression and/or manic phase passes. Your question is a valid one. Never stop researching help for yourself and this disorder. You will find answers and will be reassured that you're not alone in your struggle. The internet is a great resourse for information on bipolar. Just keep doing random searches even, and you should find lot's of info.

I do not know if your were referring to drugs your psychiatrist prescribed or illegal in a way to deal with your symptoms (from your question I am guessing the latter) Some Hospitals (at least in NY) have whats called "partial In-Patient) where you spend the whole day (about 6 hrs) in therapy and they also have drs. there that will be able to find the right drugs and regulate you even if you do not have a prescription plan. They deal with BOTH issues with or without addiction.
There are a lot of variables regarding Bipolar and "addiction" because almost 100% of the time. Patients take drugs only when the symptoms occur and they do not stick to a particular drug it can be multiple ones. Either to slow down the Mania or to up the depression. Especially if you are a "rapid cycler"
If you have any other questions or want to talk about it feel free to email me. Good Luck,
Many Blessings,
Jen

Well, are you talking about a half-way house or a group therapy meeting thing like AA? Their are half-way houses that house people with mental illness but they are usually for people with severe mental illness. If you are having trouble coping then you could spend some time in the mental hospital. However, there are groups and meetings for people with bipolar disorder. You should check your local area for some. I have some in my area, they have groups every Monday and have special speakers.

That depends on where you live. If you call a local suicide crisis line they usually have a list of places that can cater to your needs. They are an excellent source of info.
1-800-NEW-LIFE is a national referral and they might be able to help too.

at a psychiatric hospital, they administer meds and carefully moniter their effects. there are group therapy sessions, where you can interact with others that are sharing the same experience and that will better help you understand your illness.
