If you click the Lastname column and cl Sort, that column only will sort. The rest of the data will remain as is.

Do you want this?

To sort the entire file by lastname:
click the "select all" button (to the left of A, above 1)
The entire datafile will be highlighted.
click Data
cl Sort
near the bottom click Header Row
at the top, cl the down arrow and select lastname
cl Ascending
cl the down arrow by "then by" and select firstname

All rows will be sorted by lastname, firstname in ascending order.

They'll be sorted alphabetically in ascending order based only on last name.
