i would notify the store where you found the ring. Leave your name & phone number & if someone calls and describes the ring you found the true owner, if not....i'd say i'd wait about 3 weeks........then i suppose its yours to keep.

The ring is yours to IFF* you've given "due diligence" in trying to return it to the rightful owner: you should go into the surrounding shops and the local police station to offer a statement of what you've found in "general terms" and give your phone/ contact info.... even a email adress will do. Any would-be claimants should be able to offer up an adequate description of the ring... the setting, color, style of cut, etc. Also many rings have small engavings on the inside of the band for that very reason... look for one.... if the claimant can tell you that, then they are the rightful owners... I'd personally wait a week before going to the "hawk-shop" with it... that's called adequate /due notice. After that, it's "finder's keepers." Just make sure you can sleep with your decision... that's what a conscience is all about...

*IFF = if and only if

Find the owner, usually valuables are marked against theft so can't be sold
and upon return there can be some financial gain, to stave off hunger
considering that most of us believe that its not wrong to steal if you are hungry.
However I have heard that in some cities in Italy it is illegal not to feed for free anyone in any restaurant..so the restauranteurs place a table at the back of their restaurants and all uneaten foods (not halfeaten tablescraps) and leftovers are served there. I have been told that seperate dishes and cutlery are used and washed seperately and the table is nicely set.
However unless starving, returning the ring could bring a little happiness to the owner and that might bring a little happiness to you.
You Give a little, You get a little.

The right thing is to at least leave a note at the store in case someone calls looking for it. Beware and dont let anyone see it as an employee may have a friend call and pretend they lost it so you will need the caller to give you an good description of it. I always try to give people their stuff back...lets see, I've found a $5,000 diamond bracelet and I got it back to the owner, an ipod, wallets, purses, etc. and I got it all back to its owners. I worked in a bar and would find stuff all the time. Just because someone was careless or stupid or just unlucky enough to lose it does not mean it is ok to simply keep it. At least make an attempt.

One time I found another diamond bracelet at work and no one asked about it so I got it fixed and two weeks later a damn note went up asking for it. I kept that one because I had already paid to fix it... Then it broke off my wrist at another bar so I just scrapped it at a pawn shop. Oh and someone gave me a little diamond flip flop at work that they found and I wore it to work in case anyone recognized it and they had lost it. Two months later some girl said it was hers (it really was) so I gave it back to her even tho I really liked it by then. I made her wait an hour or so tho because she was kinda snotty about it like I had stolen it. After she acted like a wuss and didnt ask for it back I gave it back to her, lol.

The only choice is to at least try to find the owner. I lost my wedding ring last year, so I know how horrible it feels to explain that to the wife. Anyway, if you cant find the owner its your gain. Don't take it to a pawn shop, they will rip you off. Try selling it in the paper! Good luck, and always remember god is watching.

Try to find the owner. If you were the one who lost the ring, wouldn't you appreciate that someone tried to find you to return it? After a reasonable amount of time, if you could not find who it belongs to, then I would keep it.

I would take it to the Police. I would hope that if someone found MY diamond ring they would be nice enough to turn it in.
You might get rewarded for your honesty even.. and some places.. depending on what it is of course.. a ring for example.. you turn it in and if it sint claimed in a period of time you get to keep it.
So yea I would turn it in. It might be something special to someone.

I tried on a baseball glove at Wally World and pulled one out...kept it....

If I was to see an add in the paper or something, I would return it, but if you turn it in somebody else is just going to keep it....

Turn it over to the cop. The owner may seeking it seriously. If not, it will be your own. Good Luck!
