Mechanical seals are found on centrifugal and rotary positive displacement pumps. This is going to be simply put. A pump moves liquid. It does it by sucking it and pushing it through the pump or slinging it out of the pump. A centrifugal pump slings it out, like a fan pulling and then pushing dependinjg on where your standing. But unlike a fan, you want to control the moving liquid and make it real efficient so you put a housing or shell around the fan with and inlet and an outlet. but to get the fan inside the pump to turn on a shaft through the housing around it without loosing the liquid you need "mechanical seals",yea, we did it. Mechanical seals are real simple, they are an "O"-ring trapped in a holder of some kind around the shaft that turns the fan or impellor in the housing or volute! There are dynamic seals (that turn with the shaft) or static seals (that remain fixed and grip the shaft). Hope this helps.

If you would like to know about pumps go to www.pumpindex.com. Now, Mech seals are the wonders of engineers and the nightmare of technicians. They usually seal the shaft from the pump to the motor. They do not leak in contrast to packing, but they are a little tricky to put on. Most popular is John Crane seals. Actually most seal manufacturers ruled themselves by the original John Crane type designation.

Cuttlekid gave a good explanation of the pump, but let me elaborate on the mechanical seal.Mechanical seals work very well as long as they are kept wet. They are usually made of a ceramic material that is highly polished. There are two parts, shaped liked a donut, with the polished surfaces facing each other. When the liquid is introduced it creates the seal.Try sliding a wet piece of glass along a couter top that is shinny smooth.
