RAM - Random Access Memory is a type of dynamic memory used mainly in desktop computers and laptops to store information that needs to be quickly accessed by the CPU (Processor). It comes in 3 varieties. DDR, DDR2 and DDR3. The DDR stands for "Double Data Rate" meaning it runs at twice the speed of the old RAM which is now redundant. Each type of RAM supports a different speed. DDR is now very old and supports speeds from 200MHz - 667MHz. DDR2 is also now becoming obsolete and runs between 800MHz and 1066MHz where DDR3 is now the latest and greatest RAM type and runs between 1066MHz and 2000+MHz. All current motherboards now support DDR3 memory. The most common speed is 1333MHz PC-10666. The same speed as most socket 1155 and AM3 processors. The most beneficial amount of memory at the moment is 4GB for most systems. For high performance systems you may use anywhere between 4GB and 32GB of memory. Memory also has a feature known as Latency. It is the number of cycles the memory has to skip before executing another action, however unless you actually understand how RAM works it isn't worth knowing. Just know that the lower the Latency then the better. I.E. A memory with a latency of CL-8-8-8-16 is faster than memory with CL-9-9-9-25. The best manufacturers of memory are Crucial. Corsair and G.Skill. I hope that helps.
