Last week I made the decision to give up caffeine and have just finished day 7. I know this will be better for me in the long run but right now my body is feeling completely out of whack; I'll feel sleepy, nervous and jittery, shaky, irritable, and today I was having some odd memory trouble (forgetting what I walked into the living room for, passwords, etc). My only logical guess is that these are withdrawl symptoms. How long will it last and is there any way to get rid of it faster?

Maybe you should consider elimintating the caffeine more slowly.

Oh god, I know what you are talking about. I gave up my beloved diet pepsi about a week ago.

I know this isn't going to win 'best answer', and it probably won't take care of all your symptoms, but it should help a LOT. I take a super vitamin B complex (or vitamin B super complex?) and I drink at least one gallon of water a day since I stopped, and it does help.

Vitamin B complex gives a big energy boost (and your body eliminates any excess amount, so it doesn't build up to hamful levels and hurt anything). Vitamin B complex helps with mood regulation and memory, also. And it's cheap ($3-$7/mo., depending on how 'fancy' you want) far cheaper than a caffiene habit.

And water... most people are dehydrated, and that makes you tired because your body doesn't have the water it needs to keep your organs (including your brain) hydrated. That leads to varying levels of malfunction (again, including your brain).

Third, breathe deeply. The same thing about water can be said for breathing. You need to breathe deeply to get oxygen to all your organs (enter brain, again). Three times a day, take ten slow, deep breaths. You'll feel the change immediately.

So there you have it. At least _try_ these tips I gave you, it's practically free. All it takes is cheap vitamin B com, water and air and you shall set yourself free. Oh, and willpower...and you are stronger than the caffiene, so remember that.

Best of luck to you.

Some herbal tea might help; also, hot or warm baths, fresh air, some short walks or dancing to get your metabolism going, ice water, also I have been meaning to do this next time I quit; I want to check the nutrient content of coffee to see what else I might be withdrawing from other than the caffeine for example niacin but I dont think that's one of them. My creativity dies when I give up caffeine but if I think about it now when I'm not feeling that way, I think it would help in retrospect if I tried to create anything, even if I thought it was just garbage at the time.

Better to withdraw slowly, caffeine can take another week, have a little each day for two days, then stop is much easier. Cleaning out system with colon cleanse etc, may get it over with faster but not by much, one day less. Also, caffeine is not as bad as they say, has some positive effects, depends on your reason to quit, their are worse addictions in this world.

Strangely enough I used to get nervous, jittery when I used to be on caffeine. I found getting off it was better by just tapering off instead of going cold turkey.
Some how I don't think you problem is caffeine with drawl, but something else. You might want to see a doctor.

When I quit I also came down with the flu so I didn't if my headaches were from the flu or from lack of coffee. I had also started a new job so the jittery, shaky stuff went on too but I did feel better after the flu was gone.

ah..thats withdrawl. Not too pleasant. Headaches can be nasty. Lots and lots of water helps and sleep whenever you can for now. It will pass soon. You are over the worst of it..they say 7 to 10 days. Good job...caffeine is nasty.

It does not last longer than one more week. It will be easier if you take black tea with small amount of ginger paste and a drop af sweetener.
