I notice that a lot of female soldiers who have been killed in Iraq or on deployments have been Army, Navy, or Marine soldiers. Does anyone know the likelihood of being deployed into combat as a female in the Air Force, IF YOU ARE ENTERING AS AN OFFICER? I wasn't sure if it was different for Enlisted females and female Officers. Thanks.

I don't know about the officer VS. enlisted thing, but you have to remember that Air Force deployements are so much shorter and the living conditions and what you are required to do are different from other branchs. where Army and Marines deploy for 12-18 months, you guys deploy for 3-6 months. So by pure numbers you have less deaths. You deploy less people as well as shorter time periods

The general policy is that we are deployed where ever our rotation takes us. So far, no problems have occured (officers and enlisted alike).

But that's for the Air Force side, I won't know about the other branches so you will need to ask around. However, do expect to be deployed with other branches of the Armed Forces, especially for certain MOS, like intelligences and service support. My last deployment was with Army Rangers and JSOC (ground TAC and FIST elements).

The strength of the Air Force lies in Mobility, most occupations are deployable assets, except historian I believe. Being deployed for the air force usually means to a airport hundeds of miles from the conflict rather than walking in downtown Bagdad

My daughter flew medical evacuation out of Ramstein Germany for the first three years of the war. Besides regular flites that could be to Iraq or Bosnia, or just a hop to Spain, she did several deployments some as short as two weeks and some as long as three months. The big thing tho' is the nature of the job, flying in and out of the tarmac at Bagdad Airport, or Balad is light years away from driving a Hummer around down town Bagdad

OK, I asked hubby who is an AF officer and he said that male or female will be deployed as along as they are needed. I asked what if there is only one female deploying with them. His answer was that she'll get a whole tent to herself as they don't put male and female in the same tents. He also told me that he would keep a close eye on his guys to make sure that she doesn't get unwanted attention.

I deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq in 2003 and there were plenty of females on the base doing everything from services to escort (following the TCNs around to keep them out of areas where they don't belong) to ATC to, well, all sorts of jobs on base. There is no difference in likelihood of deployment than your male counterparts.

Good luck, Ma'am.

all the branches are strting to intgrate, so you might find an Air Force security specialty going on patrol with the Army. There are also rockets that can reach into a base even though the target may be far away

Generally you go where you are needed. And right now that not in a cushy job in Germany. We have Airforce Females flying F-16 fighter jets for example. See the Fighterchicks http://www.fighterchicks.com They can tell all about AF females.

Females are not intentionally put into combat, but it can happen.

But just because they aren't being put into combat does not mean they aren't being deployed. Everyone is deployable.
