How important is it for him to have his own car right now? Is there a pressing need (long distance to work, runs family errands, etc.?)
My belief is that teenagers need to know that driving is a privilege, and that it can be revoked upon not following the proper safety rules until the teen has shown he/she is mature enough to understand the consequences of bad choices -- because in the case of cars and teens -- bad choices can end up in death.
Additionally, owning a car (or being given a car) is a huge responsibility -- I think teens should be involved in the process of buying a car -- but if that cannot be done, then they should be responsible for money for insurance and gas and maintenenace. They will learn to respect the car more if they have a hand in paying for it -- and they will learn responsibility for this as well. In our area, teens routinely get cars for graduation, and birthdays, and are given the keys to the SUV so that they can "all" go to the dance. Teens aren't ready for this. More teenagers have car crashes than other age groups, (four times more than other drivers) and the way to avoid this, is to make it a gradual thing -- many states restrict night driving and the number of passengers in a car. I think those things are important. Find out the laws in your state.
Look over the following article before you make your decision.

What does Christianity have to do with having a sweet ride at 15????/
He is a teenager, and id judged by his peers, whether you want to accept that or not, it's the truth.
be a parent, not a Christian, and make sure he DRIVES safely. Safety should NOT be the responsibility of the car, rather the driver. That's where YOU come in.

More power to him, if that's how he wants to spend his money. I would just give the step-dad or son ONE BIG stipulation: Only if you pay the FULL COVERAGE insurance on a 16-year old. If his wallet allows for that, you should be the only one to have a spare key. Make sure he goes to some driver safety courses in addition to "driver's ed" and he should be safer than my 17 year old who has a "land boat" and barely passed his test. God will take us when he is ready whether or not we are driving a convertible camaro or mac truck. Be Blessed!

I agree with you that it is very unwise. However, on the practical side, has he gotten a quote for insurance for a teenager driving that kind or car? My mother created family unrest by proposing something similar for our teenager. I called the insurance agent and realizing that I was probably powerless to stop the gift through persuasion, I took the position that that whoever gave such a gift had to also pay all of the insurance premiums through the age of college graduation since the child could not earn enough himself to afford them. Seeing the numbers, mother repented and the gift never materialized.

The actual amount of safety from Car to car is so minimal in the real world, I dont think it matters.
your sons ability to cruise safely is the bigger factor and a red camaro convertible will defenitely make him want to hit the gas more.
If you hit a tree at 60mph, you will die no matter what you are driving.

Why buy a teenager a new car when he'll most likely will get dents in it? Your insurance will go up. I would just let him drive in an old used car until he has more driving experience and can help pay for the car.

Maybe you can work out a compromise - Crummy car now, Convertible when he graduates high school with good grades. I think 15 is too young for this kind of car. If he gets this now he'll expect everything to be handed to him in life.

The only safety difference is the design of the cars. A kid can get behind the wheel of a stagecoach and crash it. I say let him have it and you never know he might surprise you and be a good driver.

He should be driving an old truck. The insurance is cheaper, it is more reliable and easier to maintain, and if he hits someone, he will probably still be able to drive the vehicle. Let the kid earn his own money and buy his own convertible after his penis quits working, just like his daddy.
