The original story was Albert and Walter, one a maker of great burgers and the other a root beer Meister. Of course that was the corporate story.

In June of 1919 Roy Allen purchased the formula for his root beer from a pharmacist in Arizona.He took on a partner in 1922 named Frank Wright.They used the first letter of there last names which was A for Allen and W for Wright which formally became the beverage A & W Rootbeer.

It used to stand for whatever they wanted it to. Some years back they did commercials with "Albert & Walter". Now they sell "Allen & Wright" coffee. Roy Allen & Frank Wright are the actual names of the founders, and they started the name in 1922.

The two partners combined their initials - "A" for Allen and "W" for Wright and formally named the beverage, A&W Root Beer, Three units were opened in Sacramento, then on to other northern and central California locations and to the states of Texas and Utah.
