Please,
I'm trying.
I study science and want to know what it has gotten us.
We have technology but it eliminates the need for people to want to understand each other. We don't need anyone anymore since everything can be ordered, bought or easily made.
I don't even have to leave my house anymore to survive.
Should life be this easy?
I think of the tribal people and indigenous peoples and see they have happiness with nothing to call their own. Are we any better?
At least their ways are self-sustaining, aren't they?
We know evolution has merit but not complete, but we also know the several versions of god exist indepedently across the world.
So, even if your not into looking into other's beliefs, we should at least establish some sort of understanding of each other and what they can contribute right now.
How will the earth look in 200 years?
What if you were in charge?
Who says we can't be?
This is serious, what do we do right now?
What is the next step ?
peace

Have you read David's Sling?
The next step is to have some kind of purposeful drive to empower people to derive meaning from communications and make rational decisions.
Forums like Yahoo Answers are indeed an excellent start.
I'd hope that eventually there would be some kind of internet forum where people could debate and discuss things, and others could apply logic and Rhetoric to determine and show which parts of which discussions, or debates, or conclusions were fallacies and why, in a user-friendly way, supported by the software involved.
For that matter, I'd love to see a talk show with a panel discussing things where the moderator-host had control of which single microphone was on at which time, rather than the insipid shouting matches from Donahue thru Springer.
If you really want to know what science has gotten us, contact your local Soceity for Creative Anachronism group or Renaisance Faire group, get some clothing made for you out of leather and wool, live for a few months without toilet paper, any laundry other than standing in a river pounding your wet clothes on rocks, eating only what you kill with bow and arrow and cook over an open fire, don't read or write, don't watch televison, use telephones, or computers or cars or buses or bicycles - - - avoid using anything and everything produced by the application of science.
People still want to understand each other, but since Rhetoric was purposefully removed from all European school curriculae in the 15th Century, we began losing and now we have almost fully lost the ability to winnow meaning out of messages. We've got to get that back, and quick! We've got to create and apply data strategies, we've got to find a way to engage in community with each other again, we've got to find ways to allow each other to believe opposing concepts without any thought of violence toward each other.

What makes you think tribal and indigenous people are so happy? If they were, wouldn't you throw away all your money and possessions and go live in the wilderness? And why does your question drift back and forth between religion and environmental concern? I can't imagine how one has anything to do with the other. Also, nothing is self-sustaining. Anyone who thinks that humankind and the planet Earth are going to be around forever is an imbecile. So go buy a lot of hemp products and drive a Prius and recycle your garbage while you pretend it makes some kind of difference. It doesn't.

No matter how high the quality of life may become, people will still be happy and unhappy.
It's sort of like money. No matter how rich you are, or how poor you are, you can either be happy or unhappy.
I think that if anything, the Internet is bringing people together more, though. Yahoo answers is an example. The more we communicate, the more we can understand each other.
Think of the opposite. Imagine if you were stuck in a small town, in a home with no Internet access. What if your parents raised you with false teachings. Would you have any hope of being exposed to better teachings?
One last thought: what if, in the future, people could literally be connected with each other. What if you could share your mind directly with a friend, such that your friend could empathize with you?

I'm overwhelmed. How does one go about answering this question when it's couched as a multitude of questions. I only want to make one other comment, what do we do right now? We live the best lives we can live and look out for the person who is less fortunate than we are so that we can be of some help to them. We involve ourselves in organizations that actually do some positive good and if we can't help those who live in small villages in the jungle, we can at least pitch in to help with Habitat for Humanity.

We have to get involved. For a starters, make an informed decision and go vote. Contribute your time to organizations concerned with the welfare of man and our environment. Write letters. Teach our children how important it is to protect the earth. Teach our children that it is wrong to judge someone just because they are different. Either culturally, or religiously. The real future lies with them.

We'd better start worrying about global warming, because the next step is more drought, famine and more Hurricane Katrina's.
How self sufficient do you think you'll be when you don't have any electricity?

With so much more time we can visit that many more people in the nursing homes and in the hospitals or we can volunteer at the food banks or all kinds of things.

After humans move into a gravity-free environment, in orbital or deep-space habitates, they will evolve into a beach-ball shaped entity with spindly limbs and a muscular, tube-shaped fundamental orifice. They will subsist primarily on a diet of cabbage and peas, and propel themselves about their environs via controlled flatulence.

WHAT DO WE DO NEXT??
I would suggest doing random acts of kindness to all you meet. I think you are right in saying that working on our UNDERSTANDING of others is right on target!
I believe that God is the Creator: how God did this, I don't care. I do believe that it was/is through an evolutionary process.
