22 years old. Baptized in the Mormon church at 8. Never really active in church. Should I embrace the church and act like I believe it's real and true even though I think it's probably all a sham?

That is something you need to decide for yourself. However we can weigh out the pros and cons.

Pro: Large and powerful network./ Con: -10% of gross pay.

Mormon tabernacle choir. / 3-5 hrs. of intense boredom,
Pr. week.
Opportunity to travel / Opportunity to be a missionary

Subservient females / Eternal commitment

Good collage football team / No Beer

Designer under ware / Designer under ware

No you shouldn't ACT like you believe it, it will be the same as if you weren't living it at all.

Read the Book of Mormon, start to attend church, pray to your Heavenly Father. If you sincerely want to know if it is true and not just a "sham", you will receive an answer.

What would keep you FROM the church? It is wonderful, the blessings of being a member and also attending the temple are REAL. The church is true, the only true church on the earth. Other churchs/religions (most Christians anyways) are on the right track towards the truth, they just don't have the fulness.

If you want to be with your family (and spouse if married or future spouse) the only way is through the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Good luck.

If you believe that the LDS church is a sham, I wonder if you perhaps still believe in God, but not sure about the practices and preachings of your church?

If that is the case, would you earnestly pray and ask God to reveal his wisdom to you on this issue? I have this feeling that if you seek out the Bible (not just the book of Mormon) to find out what God is telling you, you will find the answers you need.

God knows our hearts, so He would know the truth if you just pretended.

While it may be easier from a family standpoint (if you were baptized at 8 I'm guessing this is a family religion for you), it may bring you a lot of heartache if you are not sure that this is the right religion for you.

So, would you pray about it?

Hypocrisy is not the way to go no matter what you believe. And besides the problem with Mormon doctrine in light of the Bible (Galatians 1:8 is a major problem, given that Joseph Smith claimed he got the Book of Mormon from an angel), why would you want to stay anyway if you don't believe in it? That's a recipe for much deeper problems down the road. Feel free to drop me a line at chad@jesusfreak.com if you'd like.

If you feel it's a sham, then no, don't become an active member. It's your choice. But, by the sounds of it, you aren't happy with the Mormon way. You will hurt no one but yourself if you follow something you don't whole heartily believe in.

Why would you join something you think is a sham? Find a church that teaches the bible only. Then you will be on the right path.

I tell you know, brother, Mormonism is a SHAM. Listen to me, it's important, don't give your life away and burn in hell because of a popular but false religon, known as Mormonism. Be in a baptist church, who believes in Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Ghost, and to serve him and him only. Obey the ten commandments, read the REAL bible, and serve the Lord in his name. Please, do not become a Mormon. Get saved, this time as a follower of Jesus and as a Baptist.

those of the church who come from this world having an idea of three Divine beings cannot be admitted into heaven,
since their thought wanders from one Divine being to another; and it is not allowable there to think three and say one.{1} Because in heaven everyone speaks from his thought, since speech there is the immediate product of the thought, or the thought speaking. Consequently, those in this world who have divided the Divine into three, and have adopted a different idea of each, and have not made that idea one and centered it in the Lord, cannot be received into heaven, because in heaven there is a sharing of all thoughts, and therefore if any one came thinking three and saying one, he would be at once found out and rejected. But let it be known that all those who have not separated what is true from what is good, or faith from love, accept in the other life, when they have been taught, the heavenly idea of the Lord, that He is the God of the universe. It is otherwise with those who have separated faith from life, that is, who have not lived according to the precepts of true faith (Heaven and Hell n.2).

Why would you want to become active, if you think it's a sham? You need to find out what it is you believe in first.
