You want an SLR. Whether it's film or digital is up to you. You NEED the ability to take rapid sequences of pictures with (generally) a long telephoto lens and this is only really satisfactory in the SLR world. I like Nikon, but Canon is also good and Pentax may be worth taking a look at.

Personally, I like the Canon cameras.
I bought my first Canon (a 35mm SLR) back in the mid 70's and took over a thousand pictures with it. Then, about a year and a half later I traded it in and upgraded to an even better model and bought a second camera body, so that I had two cameras to work with. I used those two cameras for several years.
Finally, I retired those two older cameras and bought a newer model 35mm SLR and all new lenses and a flash.
About a year ago, I also bought a Canon Digital camera (a PowerShot A95). It's a 5 MegaPixal camera with several automatic shooting modes and it also has a manual mode.
One of these days I would like to get a Canon Digital SLR, but they are so expensive and I have no money.
You didn't indicate how much you are willing to spend, so it's really hard to recommend a camera to buy.
I would recommend that you don't get anything less than 4 Megapixal, but 5 Megapixal would be better.
One thing to keep in mind, even the best camera in the world won't help you get good pictures if you don't know how to use it. As a matter of a fact, if the camera is too advanced, it could have the opposite effect and you could end up getting worse pictures.
The link below is for a Canon PowerShot SD700 IS and it goes for around $400.
I think, it would do great for what you want.
Unless you want a Digital SLR, then you are looking at spending around $900 or so.

It's been a struggle of mine for some time now. and I have got it narrowed down to these two cameras.
As much as I like the versatility of the Canon, I really don't like the Idea of exposing the CCD to change a lens.
I like the Nikon because of it's versatile fixed lens, price, and clear fast shooting.
Click on the links below to see both and decide for yourself.

first of all you'll have to indicate how much you are prepared to spend. the Nikon d50 is the best average camera.great shots, easy to understand controls, quick responsiveness and selling at 699 dollars. you WONT get a better camera with less than 900 dollars. the picture project software that comes with it is one of the best and easy to use.it comes with a battery that shoots over a 1000 on one charge.you wont have to buy a battery.it's an all rounder and i recommend it to everyone.

I like Sony's Cyber Shot. Just look around and see which camera works best for you. You could try to ask to use one of ur friend's cameras and see how it works.
