Its simple-shaped easy to remeber design was picked for the very reason of helping people to remember how much of what to eat. The problem is, nobody remembers the placement of the contents within the pyramid, so the design is flawed.
In Japan, they have the pyramid upside down -why they put it in this impossible position, I'll never know.

well because it fits good with the amount you need from each level.
It breaks it up into levels well.
Being a triangle shows that there are levels as it comes to a point. A circle would just be like something floating about with writing in it. Plus it's harder to draw, lol.
Although I agree with the Japanese way. The regular way gives the impression that the most important foods are at the top. (as most things are done that way, order of importance starting at the top)
The pyramid, while clever, is now seen as outdated. But is still a very general guide.

The group with the most servings per day is at the bottom and then the servings per day get smaller as you go up, therefore it comes to a point. I think the pyramid design is an excellent idea and the title "food pyramid" is great and easy to remember. Bravo to the inventor(s)!

You should eat more stuff towards the bottom of the pyramid (like vegatables) than the stuff towards the top of the pyramid (like fats).

Less of the bad stuff at the top like fats.
More of the moderate stuff like medium calorie
starches and proteins.
Lots of really good healthy fruits, vegetables,
nuts, fish, low fat items at the bottom.
