Please never purchase a puppy from a pet store! No ethical breeder would *ever* consider selling puppies to a pet store. I can honestly say that I have never known *anyone* to purchase a puppy from a pet store or a flea market and end up with a healthy puppy. What they've usually just bought is a lifetime of medical expense from a poorly bred dog out of inferior breeding stock and poorly cared for parents.
Do a search for Shih Tzu Rescue and make application to be placed on their list of potential adopters. Many wonderful dogs come into rescue due to reasons such as death of owner or divorce of owners; some for really sad reasons such as "we had a baby and now Fido doesn't fit in," etc.
If you are just determined to have a puppy, please purchase from a reputable breeder ~ one that can provide you with references, that will allow you to see their breeding set up, see the parents, etc.

Ok.... Please do not buy a dog from the pet stores. The dogs you find at pet stores usually come from puppy mills. Everyone knows what those are right!!!
Find a private breeder. When we got our shih tzu, we got her off of www.puppyfind.com. From a wonderful women a few hours away. You can search by breed, state, and sex. If you need help with the site let me know. But definitely check it out!

I agree w/"janet lw"....never buy from a pet store!!! First, check w/your local animal shelters. You can also go on-line and look for a shi-tzu breed rescue group. These groups take in certain breeds and place them in new homes. There is an adoption fee, but it is usually less expensive than buying from a breeder. If you do buy from a breeder, check them out well. Make sure this is not someone just breeding puppies to make money.

I don't know how much you could get one for, but what I do know is if your timing is perfect you could get one for FREE! If you go to your local pound or spca they sometimes have purebreads (pretty often actually). You can set something up with the staff that if one comes in they can hold it for you and you can come in and look at it. I know that our local spca (in California) does this all the time. If not, just check often because they go quickly. If you don't like this idea, go on google and type in shitsue. Good luck!

you can check w/breed rescue groups in your area..or your local human society.
you do not want to get a puppy from a pet store. pretty much all puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. these dogs may look okay when you buy them..but can have a lifetime of health problems. the dogs are locked are in small cages and bred over and over for their whole life.

Never buy a puppy from a pet store. Pet stores buy puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills are horrible places where they force female dogs to keep breeding litter after litter after litter. The dogs are not taken care of and they live with many dogs in small cages and are never taken for walks or have any human contact beyond the breeding process. They peep and poop in their cages. They are not loved at all. Because of excess breeding the puppies are often ill and you can buy one like this. Go to your local animal shelter and adopt a lonely dog who needs a lot of love and a good home. Good luck.

You should just go to a rescue place or adopt a dog for a cheap fee (and most are already spayed/neutered, have their shots and all that good stuff). There's lots of puppies and dogs that need homes. Maybe there'll be a shitzu pup or dog there.
