I'm sorry sweetie, I really don't understand that one either. My hubby has always complimented me, and I love that about him. My lil' brother is the same way.
But I know alot of men who think women are stupid enough to believe everything they are told about themselves, so compliments, are used to a mans advantage against women. It's not all men, but alot of them. I'm not a man hater by no means. But this is the way of the world hun. Sorry.
Don't blame yourself, girls, or even other dudes, just blame it on society, and the ignorace it instills in others...

Nick: You are either a nice guy who respects women or this is a new line I had never heard of - at least with such casual, puppy dog language. "We just like to see you happy?" Now that's a line often used but with the personal pronoun, "I" Now, if you are "like Jesus," then you are not in the majority as men, as I see it, become hunters because there are so many girls/women out there giving trashy "come here" signals. Maybe the complimenters who mean it are guys who have learned their lesson, are a bit older and wiser and actually do mean it. But Nick, it also occurs to me that you are either naieve or sharp as a tack when you say, "I don't care what you say/think/do after (I compliment you)." That leaves you open for conniving women to come after you to use you and then tell you to get lost. Bummer.
The answer to your question therefore has to be: Men (in general) DO want something from women they compliment. They want a first date and/or a first rollinthehay, preferably both.
Now why don't you go back in to your question and do an addendum and tell us what you already know.

it is understandable for some women to take a cynical view of what you are saying, the thing they don't realise is that there are plenty of us gentlemen left in the world, some of us were brought up correctly, and are the first to hold a door open for anyone ( not just a pretty lady, as some may think) and it is only common courtesy to give up a seat on a train or bus, it's not corny nor does it have an ulterior motive..and of course , if a woman makes an effort or just generally looks good, then why not compliment her about it?? there are plenty of guys who don't know how to treat a lady and I'm just glad I'm not one of them...

And why do you wanna make us happy? Because then we'll fool good about ourselves. And when we feel good about ourselves, we wanna get it on. LOL
Don't act like you'd turn it down because you only wanted to give a compliment.
Just kidding. It's a sweet sentiment that women don't hear often. That's why we assume the worst. There's not enough men like that.

It's nice to know that there are guys who say nice things just to make us happy but if a majority of people you met said something to get something you'd feel the same way. We have found that most of you say things to get your way. I'm sorry that you have to pay for all the guys out there who are like that. Truth is so many men are not trust worthy that you really have to work to earn our trust.

AWW how sweet. Well some gurls may be self conscience and unconfident. But then again, there are the stereotypes that get in the way. sometimes if a guy says nice things lyk that that may mean that they wanna get in a gurl's pants. It all depends.

It's the same way when I kid goes to his mom and say "mom, I love you so much"... They usually want something. They are buttering their parent up for something. Iknow all guys aren't like that, but most are. I could go into a bar and have guys come up to me all night saying I am pretty or have pretty eyes and so forth, do you think they are really just wanting me to know that? No, they want me to give them my number or to even go home with them.

We girls think you want something because if all of a sudden we decided to watch football with you and we hate football you think we want something. This is because we all do kind things so little that it is strange when something nice happens to you and you don't know how to react.
