This one is obvious, he's letting you know he's cared about you since the 5th grade, and now that he's expressed his true feeling about you, he wants to go out with you

Sometimes the direct approach is best, just ask. But if that seems too bold for your liking, look for the following signs. Pay attention to your conversations with the person in question.
1) Does this person show a special interest in having a conversation with you and, once started, make an effort to keep that conversation going?
2) Has this person taken a sudden interest in your life and hobbies? This is a sure sign that he or she is interested in something.
3) Other elements of body language include frequent eye contact, holding your gaze and looking down before looking away.
4) Does the person you're wondering about just plain smile at you a lot?
Just remember, take each moment like it will be the last. This I feel will be a good start for you in knowing. Good Luck!!!!!!!

Sweetie, it is very simple...
What this all means is that you need to forget about romantic relationships completely-- for at least five years (cause right now you're only going to suck at them really badly!) and then concentrate on loving YOURSELF, loving your parents, and on getting the best education you can get! It is clear that you are not ready for this type of complicated entanglement.
This may seem like a bad thing, but it is not. If you step away from the hormones, learn to love YOU, find out who you are and what you stand for, and focus on good family relationships then you will be happier in the long run. I promise.
To put it simply:
You are at a crossroad...
You can either search for that wonderful "soul mate", find him, love him, fight with him, divorce him with 2.5 kids (destroying their world in the process) and spend years looking back with regret..
OR you can learn about you, repair your broken relationships with your family, educate yourself, then LATER-- find a decent partner to share life's ups and downs with, and make a solid home for any possible future children. Even this is not full proof, but at least you would be stronger and better educated. And besides, the first option is pure suicide for you and your progeny.

since you been friend since grade 5 maybe it would be best to ask him face to face what he is trying to say when he uttered "i love you" is this friendly love or more..
there is no doubt if he had fallen for you.. since you said that you have been buddies but open communication is needed so you would understabd each other. and you yourself would also realize if you feel the same thing.
if yes then give him the chance to prove his love for you if not tell him at once so he would not expect more.

its hard for anyone to really say exactly what his code means, so maybe you should be upfront and ask him. the real question is, though, are you asking because you're interested?? answering your question, chances are that he's opening up to you about the ex factor because he's interested and wants to let you know his background story; the 143/"i love you"-thing and having a crush on you because he wants to see if you're remotely interested. if you're really itching to know, ask him. -you talk about EVERYTHING, dont you?? ;)
