I had a casual relationship with a guy for a year and whenever we were together we'd have fun but other times it'd be like total silence, because we'd both be nervous to say anything it seemed like. Now that he's moved away, even though he still wants to keep in touch, I want him to know that I'm not always like that, that we can have fun, epsecially if he's thinking long term someday. Anyway, why didn't we open up as much?

A lack of self confidence on both sides is the culprit. Settle down and relax. You don't have to rush...especially since he has moved. You can have fun as well as get to know him better. You can have nice conversations over the phone, or even better, write to each other. Both of you will become more open through your letters.
One caution of concern though, don't expect too much. Don't leave yourself open to become hurt. Your living distance will probably narrow the relationship to that as friends rather than lovers.

The letters can be a joy to receive.

Enjoy!

seems to me like you both had a bad history of relationships and dont want to get hurt or hurt each other. so instead of being yourself you are nervous they will hurt you if you open up. Once you two get hanging out more and end up trusting one another you both will open up more and get over the shyness. if you both care for eachother and want it to get more serious you both will learn that you both are comminted and will slowly adjust and show your true self. give it time, it will happen.

sounds like there could have been some real feelings on both sides. At least for me that seems to be when I sometimes cannot find words to say, because my mind is racing about all the feelings

you both are in denial of your true feelings for each other ... u all need to have long honest talk at some place where you can be for a long time and if it gets intimate then u can go for it...

because things are still new to a certain poin and neither one of you probally knows exactly how to take each other, so it's probally hard for ya'll to just open up and be at ease with each other.
