The bible states that if you have a problem with someone, go to that person and try to resolve the problem in private.
So, if you saw this happen, you should go to the person that you say do it, and resolve it that way.
If this does not work, THEN you confront the person again, only this time with two to three witnessess and hopefully resolve it this time.
If that doesnt not work, now you go to the pastor and hopefully resolve it at this level.
Honestly, anything we can think of is covered in the bible somewhere. I wish more people would read their own bibles and not rely on man (any man) to tell them what it says.

I think this is the proper thing to do.
Sin is a personal act. However, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
- by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
- by protecting evil-doers.
If you sacrificed all week to give $10 or $20 or $50 to your parish to pay salaries and keep the lights on then you saw someone take that money out of the collection, how would you feel?
Informing the priest may let him:
+ Talk to the person and possibly save a soul
+ Possibly identify a real need that can be better addressed in a more conventional method.
+ Possibly deal with the situation without bringing the
police into it
With love in Christ.

Well, if a person was stealing from the offering plate, maybe they really needed it. Besides, how would he know if someone stole from it or not? It's not like there is a predetermined amount the church collects on any given Sunday.
It's up to you whether you want to report it or not. The monies collected should help the community anyways, so it will go back to the person eventually anyways. Well, in theory that's what should happen.

It depends on how you take it.
Did the priest mean someone was stealing from the plate or from the place the money resides after it is all collected?
Anyway, why does the Catholic church need to collect money anyway? Is it not the richest church in the world? Look at how sumptuous the Vatican is!

i think he is right in saying that because no one should be stealing of the collected money from the church. reporting it is a different thing because it is between the stealer and God to decide why and if they are going to heaven. i would as the priest his reason for saying this (maybe he knows someone stealing or maybe he is just looking for a way to become better known as a priest.)

It sounds like the priest is appealing to his parishioners collective common sense, supported by the Commandment Thou Shall Not Steal. With that in mind, there's nothing wrong with what the priest said.

It must mean he thinks someone is stealing from the collection basket during mass and needs someone to second it. Are you steeling from the collection basket? Maybe it was to let the theif know that he is on to them and that him mentioning it will deter them from doing it again. If you know who is let that person know in a discreat way that it is not okay.

Why would this be wrong? How strange to think so. The priest did not say how he will respond, but if this problem is occuring among his parishoners, he needs to know. Is a kid in trouble, angry or on drugs? Is a man trying to hide a spending spree or is some woman trying to hide a gambling problem? He didn't say report it to the police, did he?

Well, it would be the "honest" thing to do if you saw someone stealing wouldn't it? But, maybe it would be somewhat inappropriate to say during mass.
