The pain you feel may or may not be caused by something in your heart, but it would be wise to get this checked out. The article linked below discusses some of the causes of chest pain, both cardiac and noncardiac. See your doctor to get a diagnosis. Better safe than sorry.

You need to go to a chest pain center when you have chest pain. They have great tests that will determine if it is your heart. Don't tell yourself it isn't a heart attack, you don't know for sure.
My husband was getting those a lot, and one time it was so bad, I talked him into going to the ER. We selected the one that said it was a chest pain center. They gave him nitroglycerin and that helped. They did cardiac enzyme blood tests, and those showed it wasn't a heart attack. They checked further, and determined that he had esophageal reflux. He had been given medication for that before, but didn't take it faithfully, and his esophagus was damaged. The doctor put him on a new medication called Protonix, to help HEAL the esophagus, and he has not had that pain since. He was told that, if he just let it go, that constant irritation could eventually turn into cancer of the esophagus.
Go see the doctor or emergency room.
P.S. He is extremely athletic and healthy; is still roofing at the age of 57.

I've had that too. Never knew what it was. Just chalked it up to some kind of cramp. I doubt if it's the heart, though. Probably just a chest muscle of some kind. You described it perfectly. I'm going to keep an eye on this Q&A because I'm kinda curious if anyone really knows.

Chest pain is not something to have diagnosed on Yahoo! Go see a Dr. have a stress test and an EKG done.It could be any number of things, some of them scary, some of them not scary,it could be nothing more than a muscle in the chest wall, or arthritic in the sternum (breast-bone) or it could be an early indication of a clogged arteries, etc.Don't be a wuss,go to the Dr. and find out for sure.

GO to the dr. --- If your heart is having pain--- there is a reason. Or it may be palpitations. But, you need to have it checked. It may be a warning. There are tons of people that do not know they have a problem before the heart attack or stroke and then realize their body was giving them little clues. the Heart is a muscle, but it is not the same as your calf. Even if it is just palpitations, that is a warning sign.

Yes the heart is the largest muscle in your body. And when you have one of these pains, it is normally called an angina attack.
