Actually, I read up on this once, and it made sense. Basically, our brain is divided into two parts -- the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious cannot make any decisions, calculations, or anything else. All it does is store information (as one other reply put it, everything you've ever done is stored there). The conscious, on the other hand, cannot store information. It is a processor, like the processor on your computer. When it needs to make a decision, it goes to the subconscious to find the information it needs, then uses that to make its decision.
However, when you're asleep, the conscious is not fully functional. It is only partly awake, and has a need to do something. So, it goes to the subconscious to gather information. Unfortunately, it is not awake enough to really know what it's looking for, so it just starts grabbing "bits and pieces." These are usually from various memories and experiences, but often totally unrelated. When the conscious puts them together into a dream, it often doesn't make any sense.
Other times, the conscious does a better job of finding things and a dream can make more sense, or even be one of those vivid ones that you can remember after you wake up (you usually forget within seconds of awaking what you were dreaming about, but occasionally you can remember one).
Anyway, that's the way I read it, and haven't heard a better explanation.

you may not be nuts. Your dreams are from your own mind. They can form from the tv being left on or simply from your own mind.
Also, people say the dreams don't relate to there own life but next time you dream look at it this way. Take time to consider if it was a nightmare or a fantisy dream. IF it is a bad dream take note to the things that happen to you the next few days. were they good or bad days. I think dreams are a way of telling us whats to come without saying HEY! YOUR GONNA HAVE A BAD DAY!

It might not be the things that you have done that day or things that you thought about that day but it might be something that is from your past or something you want but afraid to confess in reality.
Human brain collect information every second while we are awake, sometimes you are not aware of things that you hear or see and than they come out in your dreams.
I've dreamed about some crazy things that in my dream I wanted to wake up....
It's all good, man...
